Air bag Light On

On a recent trip to Fort Smith in Arkaknsas my SRS bag came on. I looked at the owners manual and it said "take to the dealer"...so when i came back home I read the forums and the TSM which is on line to see if there was an easy solution....but there wasn't. I took it to the Toyota dealer in Mckinney and they quoted me 45 dollars to clear the codes and read the new ones but when I asked them about them they were very vague and said they need about 2-3 hrs to determine the problem but did mention the b1801/50 code.

I went home and read the TSM and sure enough it said my clockspring may have a short or open condition. I took off the steering wheel as described in the TSM and took of the clockspring and tested it but it showed an "open" condition.

I quoted a new clockspring from Toyota and it is $265 dollars + labor (naturally spent like a whole weekend looking for aftermarket or used ones but had no luck!!!) so should i attempt to fix the "open" condition of the flat cable or just go ahead and buy the new part?

 

My 05 has the same problem my fix i just left it, I want it fixed but not for $265

 

^^Same here. I have heard of people soldering the broken wire back together but that's not my style. Just keep your seat belt on.

 

Well after I took the clockspring off I took it apart and tried to repair the flat ribbon cable, but taking the insulation from that cable was next to impossible. Since this problem basically takes out the whole airbag system out off commision I decide my family safety was first so I ordered the part from Toyota of Dallas from their site for just $208 dollars including taxes, and install it myself saving another $100-150 dollars!!!!!!

 

lol, you guys wont pay $265 to save a life? not even your own?

I would have gladly payed that amount for an air bag replacement. One trip to the hospital with a broken face would easily be more than $265.

 

^^Google SRS. What about a roll over or side impact, or multiple impacts ? The airbag helps but nothing beats the seatbelt. BTW airbags only became standard on trucks in 1995.

 

What exactly is showing open? If it's just the clock spring connectors there are new clock spring plugs on eBay for about $20. If it is the clock spring itself then I can't help you.

 

maybe its really an SR5 light telling you that your have a sweet truck?

 

That recall is for 2005 to 2009 Tacomas.It was issued by the NHTSA 1-888-327-4236 .Says its for a spiral cable assembly connected to the airbag's control module.But I feel sure your problem should be corrected and paid for by Toyota.Call that NHTSA number & talk to them.

 

The seat belts are driven by the same SRS System as the airbags. The Seat belt retractors are explosive squibs also. With the SRS System disabled they will not work either.
