This site has some of the most pretentious, self righteous people. It’s called a “mistake.” Everyone makes them! :deadhorse: The OP knows he fucked up and asked for advice. Telling him that he should build a time machine, go back in time to read the manual and pay better attention to the dash lights is not helpful...

True that. I've never personally done it but i can very well see how its possible. Berating someone for a mistake who admitted it and is asking for help doesn't help anyone. My 2 cents for the nothing its worth.

This guy is a jackass and trying to get a rise out of some of you, your falling right into his trap. No one is that stupid to drive around for 5 days and not notice the light on or funky noises coming from under the truck. Hope it’s true though and he’s stuck on the side of the highway at 4am waiting for that “fucking cop “to help him out......... Get a life bud !!!

You must have some swole firearms trying to get your truck into any tight parking spot in 4hi.

In 4hi your truck wants to go straight or make gradual turns.

Even a right turn on red at a stoplight should feel much more difficult in 4hi. The noise you heard was probably binding.

There’s a bunch of info available on binding, so you should be able to read up on it.

It's under warranty. Tell them you heard a noise. Give them some of their own medicine.

    Lawl,

This is frightening coming from an LEO.

TW, remind me to avoid Edinburg TX. I hear decency and honesty aren't too prevalent out there.

I would check your oil and inspect for contaminants from excess wear.

It is a pretty dumb location for the 4WD knob but I have to say, the 4hi button for 1st gens isn't much better if you have a manual trans. Easy to accidentally hit it and engage 4HI, done it a few times.

Wait! There's a flaw in the 1st Gens? TW just gasped. :D

Yeah, I know. Rusty Frames is thankfully not a Cars character.

The one major 1st gen flaw across the board is definitely the lower ball joints. Frame rust is only an issue in certain areas, though in those areas it's definitely a big one.

But the design of our lower ball joints is awful, the way it's made is such that the ball joint is constantly wanting to come apart. Toyota reversed the design on the 2nd gens so it isn't always wanting to come apart and you rarely ever hear of 2nd gens with lower ball joint failures.

But almost every week you see a post or new thread in the 1st gen forum about failing/failed LBJ's, and that's a part you do not want to have fail on you...

Those of us that are rough with our trucks have to make a point to change them out every 50-75k. Kind of like 2nd gens and their wheel bearings I guess lol.

The placement of the 4hi button is kind of annoying but I wouldn't call it an issue really

We have tons of 1st Gens here. Rust is a non-problem, which I would never have guessed when moving here. This is why the frame rust thing was a surprise also. Growing up in PA was a very different story though.

I never heard that about the ball joints (no real reason to spend time in the 1st Gen section). 50-75k isn't bad, considering. Finding out too late is never good though.

Avoid everywhere there's a car dealership. Decency and honesty aren't too prevalent there either.

yeah it's strange how little attention that issue gets around the rest of the forum compared to the frame rust issue, considering the LBJ issue effects every truck regardless of it's location.

Having this occur when going down the highway at speed would be terrifying and there are a number of threads on here where it's happened. Google 'tacoma lower ball joint failure' and you'll see what I mean lol.

    IMG_0131_30925ab2c279c6e9daba1d85aa1f256fdc023930.jpg

Although it usually happens at low speed/sharp turns when more force is applied to the joint.

There was a big recall for it on later model 1st gens due to a manufacturing defect.

Yeah. That is not a good situation. It sounds like not much warning before failure, given what you said about the design? The couple of failing ball joints that I had in the past gave some warning signs.

I just saw a newer Ram sitting like that outside of a person's house, no other visible damage. I guessed that they had the flatbed drop it there.

Usually there are warning signs, clunking, grease leaking, etc...but older trucks make older truck noises and a lot of people ignore it until it's too late.

Best way to check them is to jack the front end up and check for up/down play, easy to do but also easy to ignore.

Anyhow what was this thread about again...?
