I am feeling a little dum here but what does VVTi stand for in a 2nd gen taco V6?

Well, that's certainly better than feeling dumb.:D

Gotta start learning somewhere. Since you might get around to all the other abbreviations being used regarding your truck, here's the link to Toyota's glossary of everything (electronic brake force distribution, vvti, etc.):

Or Variable Valve Ticking. This 4.0L is brutal loud.

You're absolutely right. It seems to be more comprehensive than Toyota's glossary I posted above. With Toyota's latest recall to chop the gas pedal, their glossary seems to be missing the definition of BOHICA!

i have a question dont mean to jack your thread but since you are on vvti

I come from the honda back ground with alot of automotive experience and no way affiliated with being a ricer. With that being said on the 4.0L we have in our trucks we only have variable valve timing on the intake cams not the exhaust. The new 4.0L in the 4runners have vvti both intake and exhaust and so they are able to achieve the 270 hp. my question is theoretically will the new heads off a 4 runner bolt to the 1gr in the tacoma. I ask this with the knowledge of building frank engines with honda's. I know that you still have to have the wiring and ecu to control when the vvti switches from low cam to high cam. Or is the new 1gr plumbed with different oil passages to the heads that our version of the 1gr doesnt have.

Theoretically you would need to swap the head and the ECU, and probably modify the harness. Not sure how cost-effective it is versus just getting a TRD supercharger (304 hp @ 5,400 rpm and 334 lb.-ft. @ 3,600 rpm).

By comparison, the FJ Cruiser's 1GR-FE engine went from VVT-i to dual VVT-i in 2010. You would think the change is minimal. Yet, Googling for it, I don't think any old FJ owner has successfully done a head swap to get dual VVT-i.

How is the VVT-i compromised if you start altering the factory exhaust and intake?
