It's probably fine. Some people drive with 4Hi for days/weeks at a time if they live in certain climates or out in the boonies. The system is pretty robust and forgiving, by design.

What's done is done at this point though. No sense worrying about it.

If you ARE concerned, do a quick check by turning 4wd on and ensuring the system engages properly (no unusually loud or weird noises, and the 4wd light should come on). Drive it straight a few hundred feet or so, then make a few small turns left and right. Make sure you don't hear any weird noises. Now disengage 4wd and again make sure there are no weird noises. If all seems well, then you're good to go.

That brief grinding noise could have been the traction control systems kicking in.

Ah. That was how I found mine after some steering wheel play and odd feelings over bumps.

I found my first bad wheel bearing on my bike that way also. It going out never crossed my mind, thankfully a person on a forum pointed it out.

It has sort of turned into questionable design choices since the OP got most of his answer?

If you get it checked don't take it to Toyota because they would document it . Probably fine but wouldn't hurt to have a mechanic take a look.

Them too, they shared a similar LBJ design on the 1st generation. Same with 3rd gen 4runners. Probably T-100s as well before they became the Tundra.

Just tend to hear about it more with 1st gen Tacomas because there's a lot more of them.

    Doubtful.

My wife's uncle has had his gmc canyon for about 3 years now. He has put 100's of highway miles on 4hi and he hasn't killed it yet. I think it has about 40k miles on it now and he hasn't blown up the t-case yet.

He's always turning the dial to 4hi with his knee as he gets in and takes off without noticing. I can't count how much he complains about having made the same mistake over and over again. It's getting old. He's gone halfway to his hunting cabin in 4hi, about 100 miles from his house, before he notices. sometimes he notices when he's making the turn off the exit ramp. (Or so we've been told). He's had trucks all his life and he still forgets. He must never look at his gauge cluster, ever.

I've sure he's in for a new CV or 2 if he keeps it up. But so far, he's been good. the road to his cabin is about 10 miles of rocky muddy crap. so he does use his 4hi and 4lo from October to February and it's been holding up so far.

And by hunting cabin, we mean the wooden shed he keeps a bunk and space heater in so he doesn't freeze.

    Nothing that a little snip and tag ( @rrjr ) can't handle.

Some call it the Dominator. Future models were ribbed for her pleasure.
