Never saw this but I liked it! Good message at the end for people who are constantly trying to get a better bike that what they have or feel like they need an upgrade or brand name bike.

Probably odd for this site but does anyone have recommendations on women’s hard tails? Seems like Trek gives the best price point for the components on the bike.

Get her a Trek X-Caliber 8 in a smaller size or a Roscoe 7 (comparable men’s/women’s trek bikes). Swap tires for toobless with some rim tape/valves and you’re golden.

Both bikes are around $1,199. Roacoe is a quasi fattie but X-cal comes with airspring fork. But if you wait for demo season to be wrapping up, you might be able to squeak a deal.

Avoid anything that comes with an SR Suntour fork.

Salsa bikes have a bunch of options for that same price range as well. I’m getting my lady one because she loves the blue color it comes in

Thank you for the feedback! What’s wrong with the suntours (forgive me for not looking it up yet). Roscoe looks like a great bike though and I like that it comes with the rock shox setup.

I was initially looking at the Trek Marlin 6 for her. But now you’ve got me thinking.

She can also consider riding a "men's bike". They hold their value better. Conversely, consider looking at the used market since women's bikes don't hold their value the way men's do.

Trek is hard to beat. Might be worth checking out Giant too. The Stance is a great entry level dual suspension option that’s very reasonably priced.

Help!!! I have no fucking idea if I got the right size bike. I bought a Med. YT Jeffsy 27.5 and according to their sizing I'm dead square in the middle for a size med. and 2" too tall for a size small, but when I stand over the top tube I might as well be sucking my nut sack 2" inside me to be comfortable standing over the top tube. Every 29er I ever thought about getting I felt it was too big. My last MTB was 25 yrs ago w/26" tires and I had plenty of clearance with the sack. This is my first MTB in 25 yrs. Is this normal on FS bikes that have 27.5's and 29er's? Seriously worried I got the wrong size, but the reach feels fine.

    How tall are you?

I'm 5'10". I feel like I'm always in between a medium and a large on most brands. However, my Niner is a medium and when I first hopped on it, it felt like such a huge bike. I think the standover height is going to be taller on any 29" bike, especially coming from an older 26" bike. Edit: just realized you went with the 650b size.

Other than the standover height, how does the rest of the geometry feel?

I'm exactly the opposite... I'm also 5'10" and always felt cramped on medium frames. I felt so much more at home after switching to large frames and short stems. Height isn't always a good indicator for frame size and is too general of a reference. There's a crapload of other body measurements that will affect comfort, pedaling efficiency, and power transfer through the pedals.

@Recondite if you have odd body dimensions (short legs, long torso, long arms, etc... ) you might be better off with a fitting session from a local bike fitter. I always recommend new riders get fit to their bikes. It makes for a much more fun and comfortable ride in the long run and the fitter can address issues with wonky body/bike measurements that us mere mortals can't see.

This is the fit system I've used with all my bikes, but there are others that are just as good.

    https://www.retul.com/bike-fit

This is a self-guided fit that will get you in the ballpark: https://www.competitivecyclist.com/Store/catalog/fitCalculatorBike.jsp?INT_ID=IB12809
