Toyota Frame Settlement - Canada - Info with documentation

For anyone living in the Mississauga area, I just got my Tacoma inspected by Erin Park Toyota. Apparently they did the frame inspection, took pictures of the hole in the frame but ultimately said I was not eligible... not because my frame was fine but because according to Toyota's system there was no 'active campaign' for my truck.

They can see that I had my frame coated with CRC back in 2017 so because that campaign is now 'closed' the dealer says there's no 'file' to attach their findings and work order to. Not sure if they're giving me the run around or not but I'm going to get in touch with the class action administrator and legal counsel from the website as well as Toyota.

I suspect that if I had not taken my truck into the dealer in 2017, I would have been approved on the spot for frame replacement.

 

@SpeedyJ After you bought the truck from the PO who had the frame coated, did you get a letter from Toyota about the frame inspection/replacement?

 

That doesn't make sense. First, go on the Toyota Canada website and register your truck under warranties/tsb/recalls. That's what I did when I purchased my truck and I ended up getting a letter in the mail for the class action lawsuit for frame replacement.

My dealer also tried to deny me an inspection over the phone cause mine had already been coated in 2016. I insisted on having it inspected anyways and once they looked it over, they approved a frame.

I'm in Ottawa mind you, but I think you should take it to a different dealer.

 

Well the only the leaf spring tsb appears when I search my vin on Toyota’s website. Anyways I’ve already sent emails to Toyota, the class action administrator and the class action counsel so I’ll wait to see what they have to say.

The dealer seems to be willing to do the work but again, they’re claiming Toyota Canada doesn’t have a campaign for my truck and thus they have nothing to put the work order against.

 

thats so weird, mine was approved in 2018 and the work done in december.

What i meant to say about the recall website was by registering, they are then able to send you the documentation about the class action. I do agree with you, i did not see any recalls either but as soon as I registered, i received the documentation in the mail a week later for the frame campaign.

I just talked with the class action administrator and gave them my VIN and my story. They confirmed I am eligible for the frame replacement as agreed to by Toyota Canada's settlement. They're going to escalate my case on my behalf either to the dealer or to Toyota Canada.... so I'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Just to provide an update: I still haven’t heard back from Toyota or the class action administrator. But I got the service manager at Scarborough Toyota to review my case and based on my VIN and picture he’s also confirmed by frame is covered and invited me to bring my truck down.

 

This is good info. Thanks. I haven't taken mine in for inspection yet because the letter I received stated a deadline of July 21st, 2019 or 12 years from date of first use. Since I purchased the truck in March 2009 I figured I should let it go through one more winter before having it inspected. The truck was rust-proofed as a dealer option when I bought it so I'm not to worried about the frame breaking in half on the 401 but this past winter was brutal for road salt with all the freezing rain. Had to replace both front calipers that were sticking and they were only on the truck for one year. Couldn't believe how rusty the calipers were after only one year and after crawling around under the truck I noticed the undercoating had peeled off the frame everywhere that a bracket had been welded to the frame. I picked up a can of Fluid Film at TSC Stores when it was on sale and brushed all the surface rust. Didn't see any holes but I'm going to take a closer look in the Fall at all the green areas in the TSB.

From what I can gather on these forums, if the truck is inspected and qualifies for the CRC treatment, you're disqualified for the frame replacement.
Your experience disputes that information so maybe Toyota Canada treats their customers better?
They did give us better springs after all.

I sincerely hope that my frame does not need replacement. My truck has many mods and I do all of the work myself. I can count on one hand the number of times my truck has been to the dealership for service and both times they managed to piss me off.

It's actually July 21, 2019 or 12 years from date of 1st use. Please edit your post so wrong information diesn't get spread around.

 

If you read through Toyota’s settlement in the OPs post, you’ll see the guidelines that were agreed to for Toyota’s frame replacement program. There are many actions that take into account whether the frame has been previously coated but replacing the frame isn’t one. Regardless of whether your frame has been previously coated if your in the claim period, within the model year range and there’s a hole larger than 10mm, it ought to be slam dunk case.

Any dealer gives you the run around call the class action administrator. They have a list of VINs or applicable trucks and if your on the list they’ll make sure you get your frame replaced if there’s a hole big hole (larger than 10mm).

It’s quite shocking how little Erin Park Toyota knew of the class action lawsuit... or maybe they were just playing dumb.

 

You are correct. It's July 21st not 31st. I retrieved the letter from my glove box so I will scan the document and post it here.

And I did finally remember to edit my post so hopefully everything is now fixed.

Just a quick update on my end. I had a buddy hook me up with the service manager from Scarborough Toyota. They looked up my VIN and immediately saw that my truck was eligible. I just took my truck in earlier this week and got it approved for a frame replacement. The service manager also confirmed that I would be getting new lower control arms and brake lines (hard lines) as a part of the frame replacement. Also, if there were any worn parts that you wanted them to replace while they have the truck apart, you just have to pay for the parts since they're taking the whole thing apart anyways (I'm sure there's a reasonable limit to the applicability of this though).

They're estimating something like 6 months to get my frame ordered. Once they get the frame, it'll take around 2 days with 4 guys working on it full time to complete the swap. Toyota will provide a rental in the mean time and from what I understand I can request a truck. At the time I was there they said they had 15 trucks lined up to perform the swap so Scarborough Toyota does a lot of these.

So if your in the GTA and want to get your truck looked at, I'd recommend Scarborough Toyota to give you a fair shot. The service manager (Gord) is a great guy to deal with too. Erin Mills Toyota on the other hand appears to be either ignorant about the frame replacement or intentionally deceiving; not a good look either ways.

 

WOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!! I just got approved for a frame replacement. I bought my Taco in Washington a few years ago. At the time I inspected it, I saw that the frame was rustier that I liked, but it was the exact truck I was looking for at a price I wanted to pay. There were no rust holes at that time. When the US settlement was put out, it specifically stated that trucks imported from other countries weren't eligible. Later when the Canada settlement was put out, I saw something about for Canadian residents. Since I have no plans to move to Canada, I figured I was out of luck. It turns out that part is just for the CRC coating. Well, recently a TW member with a Canadian sold Taco, that is currently registered in the US,was approved, so I thought if he can do it, I can do it. I tapped on the frame and a hole appeared. So, I made an appointment with West Coast Toyota in Canada and got a frame inspection. That was 2 weeks ago. They just called me and told me Toyota Canada approved it. WOOOOOHOOOOOO!!! So, for anyone else, in my situation, get your frame inspected in Canada.

The deadline for '05- early 08 Tacos is this Sunday, July 21. If you have a late '08-'10, you have some time.

 

Great news! What kind of time frame did they give you for the replacement?

 

He said he'll call me when they get notice that my new frame has been shipped and work out a ballpark time to do the frame swap. He said they have 2 guys that do all the frame swaps and they do it in 2 days. At the end of the conversion, he said, "I'll talk to you in about 4 months or so."

 

Congrats brother! Fellow Canadian here. So you have a US sold truck, registered in the US and you were able to take it to a Canadian dealer?

 

I live in the US. My Taco was sold new in Canada. I bought it in Washington after it was properly imported to the US. I made 1 trip to Canada for the inspection and I'll have to make another trip when my frame gets there, but it'll be well worth it to get a new frame.

 

I’m pretty upset I’m just finding out about this now. 3 months too late? I’ve been waiting on the ass action suit for almost four years! Looks like I missed the window.

 

I'm from the K/W area . Took my 06 Tacoma into Cambridge Toyota Sept. 23/2018 . I was told it would be a month or so to get the frame . One year later they still don't know when the frame will be in . So much for this being a safety issue . The hole is just about twice the size from when it was taken in for the for the inspection . I was told there was nothing they could do , Oh , when the first inspection was done , I was told there was one vehicle ahead of me . One year later , I now have seven vehicles ahead of me . I'm real impressed .
