2010 4 cyl. reg cab 4x4 ...what gear around town.

Just want to know what speed should I use 5th gear around town. 40,45,50 !?! most of the time I'm in 4th between 40,45 around 2000 rpm's

In my 2000 I would get in 5th above 35 when just cruzin around town. Pretty much the highest gear I could get into without stalling, got really good mileage too.

 

I only use 5th for long straight aways without hills, stop lights, etc. If you aren't going ~50 mph, 5th won't provide much benefit. Engine lugging isn't terribly good for it either (when the gear is too high for the speed and the engine & drivetrain strain to keep the truck moving...sounds like a deep growl and the truck hardly accelerates). Furthermore, it doesn't do any good to use 5th if you plan to be shifting soon...the more you needlessly use the clutch, the faster you'll wear out the discs and throw out bearing.

Note: your owner's manual provides some insight as well...they provide recommended shift speeds for best fuel economy

 

i have the same setup in an '09, and my avg speeds for shifting are around:

15 mph - 30 mph -2nd
30 mph - 40 mph - 3rd
40 mph - 60 mph - 4th
> 60 mph - 5th

obviously some variations based on the situation, but my truck seems to hum along just great using those speeds...

If cruising (not accelerating) I am in this gear at this speed:
1: Rush hour, not happy
2: 10-25 (still rush hour, still not happy)
3: 25-35
4: 35-45
5: 45-

 

The gearing on these trucks are too tall. 5th is almost worthless where I live. I can’t remember the last time I used it.

 

I use 5th all the time. I just wish there was a 6th gear for the 4 banger that would let me run at less than 2k RPM's at 70-75 MPH.

 

i only use 5th gear on the freeway at 60mph+ but i also have a 5 lugger so my gears are much different

 

X2! I've always thought 5th was basically just like 4th in mine. The drop in RPMs isn't quite drastic enough for me.

 

If you live in Kansas run in fourth and fifth gears at 2000 rpm all day... If you don't save your clutch and your gear box and run between 2500 rpm and 3000 rpm

 

This is the exact way I seem to run as well!

 

I've been watching my "scanguage" (Torque app on Droid) and my mileage goes up dramatically whenever I get into 5th. So anything now above about 35 I put er in 5th unless it starts lugging.
