Thinking about getting a cold air induction kit for my 17 off road crew cab. Which brand do y’all recommend? I’m looking to add some extra horsepower!

None because they don't do anything for HP and only make noise and risk damaging the engine components.

I would install a K&N Filter as they have shown more airflow over stock filters. The K&N Intake claims 17HP

I like my TRD CAI, no real HP increase but it sounds pretty nice!

Risk damaging the engine? I wouldn't go that far..... As to HP gains, you wont see much unless you have a turbo or a supercharger. They do sound nice though.

There was a thread in here with a guy that smoked a motor or 2 with the K&N, ingested a bunch of sand or something.

Consensus on TW is that there is no performance gains. That being said many manufacturers claim there are hp and torque gains. K&N and Injen have posted dyno curves showing claimed benefits. I don't know of anyone who has independently proved or disproved any hp or torque gains. However I've heard that it does sound better.

That being said, it's your truck do what you want with it. Personally I'm tending towards the Injen intake.

Had k&n on my previous truck for few years. No issues, did notice better throttle response for sure and of course the sound. Sounded pretty sweet.

Did not really notice any power increase even tho they claimed 17 hp or something like that.

Gonna rock the stock setup for now. When my paper filter needs replacing, i will probably get aftermarker oil less drop in filter.

So I wouldn't blame all 'cold air intakes' for this. Could be a filter that is dirty or worn or got old and developed a hole. Also, the type of driving he was doing to ingest sand into the engine isn't normal driving.

I would debate that.... dudes that have superchargers would say otherwise.

I do believe they're harmful to engines, not only potentially the MAF sensor getting oil on it, but I've also posted this video before as well, check out the wear on the cylinders from poor filtration

haha good catch. I mean CAI without forced induction.

I like my TRD CAI with HPS intake tube. Sounds good and better throttle response over stock.

Something to do, take the filter out and hold it up to the sky on a clear day and aim it at the sun. See all the little pin holes of light that shine through it? That means ina dusty environment those tiny holes will allow dirt through and into the intake and engine’s combustion chamber.

    This right here.

They probably work fine in a normal environment but if you take it off road and into a dusty environment you’ll risk dust and dirt getting it to the engine.

Is this just for the K&N or is this a broad statement regarding all of the CAI including TRD, AFE, Injen etc?
