It stops you from engine braking smoothly, it'll abruptly slow down when it transitions to open loop mode though (feels the same as turning off the ignition while in gear) but only after some random amount of time at 0% throttle input. While shifting, assuming you've used the synchros to get it I to the next gear, when you release the clutch you have to do it relatively slowly or it'll jerk because the engine Rpms are way higher than they want to be. This makes day to day driving maddening compared to an old cable throttle. It's been so long now I've almost forgotten how satisfying it is to be able to properly shift as if you didn't even need to use the clutch. That's another thing that's damn near I possible to do. Shift without using the clutch. Bring Rpms up in gear, pop into neutral, Rpms stay high for some unknown amount of time, then they drop like a stone blowing past the target rpm so you have to blip the throttle up to the target rpm again. It's a constant battle.

@loginfailed according to mike sweers and another Toyota engineer I've talked to that is the case. You'll see it with many new, manual vehicles. Honda had a really hard time a while back because customers were pissed. They had to offer a different tune. Not sure how the emissions were dealt with.

I'm sure there's some sort of default overrun angle for the throttle blade in the ECU somewhere. Maybe HP Tuners will find it eventually.

    My shit is all stock.
It’s not just wide open up shifts either. Just normal driving. First to second gear. And then second to third. Shifting at like 2500 rpm. Push in the clutch, switch to third gear and then keep holding the fucking clutch until the motor slows down enough for a smooth shift. SOFA KING annoying!

I’ve always owned manual trans cars. Side-draft carbureted Datsuns, MR2’s, Mini Coopers etc. Even the wife’s 14 Clubman shifts like a dream. Give me a direct link to the throttle and I can shift them just fine. This truck tho. Ugh!

I refuse to just “get used to it” It’s wrong. It’s evil. It needs to die.

I beg of you Chris @HPTuners I’m really begging here. PLEASE!

There’s definitely something VSS related to the problem. I read somewhere that someone using different logging software was seeing another mode flashing in and out. Something between open/closed loop and OL drive. Can that be true? “BS emission mode” maybe?

Been known about for year and there was no "cure", minus alleviating the shuttle valve on the side of the manual transmission. Only helps with half of the problem.

For those that don't know, there is a shuttle valve removal thread.

I love my Haltech and its pure throttle control. :D :boink:. You guys will get there though.

One could always force the engine slow down faster, electrically.

Relay + RPM switch + timer.

    Example:

If clutch pressed & RPM > X = Cut power to coils for X seconds.

@loginfailed a product called qrevs does something like that except it cuts power to the injectors based on throttle position and Rpms.

Injectors would work better since there’s no extra fuel being wasted. What website sells them?

I don’t see a price or a link to purchase it there. I’ll read through it again later, maybe I missed it.

I always thought my truck felt like a tractor rig in stop and go traffic, never really new why, this explains it... I do have the torque-u heavy flywheel in my truck and the only way i can get smooth shifts when getting after it is by blipping the throttle on upshifts... anyone else do this ?

    My shit is all stock.

That thing was yanked years ago. I revamped the mechanical stuff completely at that point. Updated the pedal, master, pivot ball, slave, and the clutch itself. I even did the fancy stainless sleeve on the quill t/o bearing for good measure. Works great. But, not the problem here. The current programming of the ecu IS.

I ran haltech in my 510 back in the day. Worked great. Was still running a cable with that setup tho.

@BillDaCat8 what did you do for the pedal? Mines floppy like a rabbit ear and has even been replaced by the stealership complete with new bushings.

I wondered if this might mitigate the the dreaded rev-hang.

I have one in mine and it seems to have helped some. If anything, its another option to try in a mechanical sense before trying to chase it down electrically in the ECU.

There's no way it a heavy flywheel for a couple reasons.
1: when it's cold there is no rev hang at all.
2: when you do wait long enough the Rpms drop like a stone very suddenly right as it changes fuel strategies.
3: while in gear there is no engine braking sensation of course until #2 happens. Even with a monster flywheel you would still feel it trying to slow the vehicle down, albeit, a little sluggishly. Try switching your ignition off while moving in gear, it's a totally different sensation than the rev hang but closer to what one would expect for engine braking a manual.
