I was going on a weekend trip yesterday, following my girlfriend up to the Poconos to spend a few days up there.

So anyway I was following her on Rt 80 westbound in NJ in the left lane (2 lane highway). I hear a motorcycle passing me on the right so i check my mirror, don't see anything, so i look over my shoulder see the rider, think "ok i know where they are." As i look back forward all i see are brake lights. My GF in her 2004 explorer is down to about 30 by the time i hit the brakes and I put them right to the floor, ABS kicks on immediately. She comes to a complete stop and just as she does... BAM!

I hit her going about 20-30 MPH. and as soon as I hit her traffic starts moving again so we both get on the gas and move over to the shoulder ASAP. First thing i noticed on my truck was trans fluid pouring out of the cooler. So lovely... basically everything on the front is destroyed. Radiator and condensor are both bent pretty bad. cooler is obviously cracked. Bumper, hood, both fenders, both headlights are all bent/cracked. The fenders got pushed back and are binding the doors on both sides.

The only thing that saved my airbags from going off was my bull bar which took a lot of the impact and transferred it down to the frame.

So i had to get my truck towed like 75 miles back to the tow truck yard for now cuz they wouldn't leave it at my body shop still leaking. So i'm guessing i got about $9,000 worth of damage. nothing hit the engine and it looks like the engine isn't pushed back at all.

Sorry for the long rant, but it hasn't been the best weekend for me. At least my girl is being really cool about the whole thing. Mainly cuz her truck has a few paint scrapes and a 4" dent on the tailgate haha.

Here's some pics of my truck. So far the estimate is $6600 using new toyota parts. Basically both headlights, bumper, hood, fenders, radiator, condensor, trans cooler, and all the supports and everything underneath are gonna be replaced or bent back.

and BTW I HATE THE STUPID JEEP COMPASS

Looks like the bull bar came in handy that time. It's amazing how much force is involved in a 30MPH crash. It sounds so...."safe".

Glad you and your GF are OK. Get checked out good though, you never know what kind of hurts you got will pop up a year from now.

The bull bar prob caused some addiditonal damage the the bumper. But they said that it saved the airbags from going off. Which in this case is good that they didn't go off.

Glad only stuff got damaged, although the breakup timing is a shame. Ahh well...parts get replaced, bills get paid, life goes on. Take plenty of before/after shots!

Good time to switch to a different bumper if you were ever considering it. :p
