Gen 3 slow acceleration

hello everyone just got a 17 trd sport 3.5 v6 it seems like I can be on a flat road and need to accelerate and it’s either hold it to 5000 rpm or it will barely speed up. Hard to explain but it’s like there is no medium with the pedal. I feel like I constantly have to hold high rpm to speed up. Not use to this with all the other cars I have had I never had a problem. Is there a way to fix this ?

 

Ask the dealer to reset the transmission to factory so it can learn your driving habits. Maybe the previous owner had a lead foot. And get the TSB done while you're at it

Not sure what you drove before. If you previously had a 2nd generation Tacoma, your newer one definitely drives different.

Aside from that...OV Tune is the better fix. Not the cheapest but from what I hear it is worth every penny.

 

Also you didn’t mention speed or headwind. If you are going 80 it takes quite a bit of power to accelerate. If you are talking about surface road speeds the TSB will help reduce that dead pedal feel.

 

There is a point on the dyno where torque dips because Toyota did a bang up job tuning the engine. OVTune is expensive but they fix the transition of your variable intake runner to flatten out the torque curve, among other things

This motor lives in the high rpm range. Embrace it. Vroom!

drive it with ECT on, problem solved.

 

Known problem with the 3rd gen. TSB and learning the truck helps. Driving with ECT or in S5/S6 also helps. There are boosters out there that claim to help as well. OVtune has many happy customers but is pricey.

 

Drive in S4 until going highway speeds, it does help.

 

I will definitely look into this. As others have asked no I previously owned a Range Rover. Prior was a dodge 3500 and a dodge 1500 2014 and the difference was very significant to response on the throttle. I was referring speed at about usually getting on freeway going from about 50-60 or so without slamming the pedal to the floor it seems like it takes forever to catch up idk it’s weird maybe normal for Tacoma. Thanks for everyone’s response. I will look into the booster.

 

Look for someone with OVtune around your area and offer some beers for a test drive.

It will blow the sprint booster out of the water.

Or get the Toyota TSB. It's performance is about halfway of OVtune and it's free.
