What about a u-bolt flip kit? What are the benefits of this? Should I get one if I'm going to be getting new springs?

Really thinking of doing this set up but with a wheelers 5 pack. Are you running Kings with extended droop or just standard ? Not
Sure if it’s worth just getting standard

    necro-posting!!

That was my thought as well: why spend a grand on shocks to just end up with the same amount of travel.

I run the ext travel coils, and I love them. I spent just under a grand on mine, but I've since seen the price has jumped to ~$1300, so lucky me I guess.

    Thanks for chiming in.

I just started my research, but with the small amount of time I’ve spent so far it seems just the standard Kings does not do much plus it might make the ride stiff. I don’t mind spending the UCA money if accomplishes my lift height with an improved ride.

I’m also trying to justify not just getting an ome lift with 881’s.

Wishing there was a 1st gen close by to test out

There should be no real difference in the ride between the std and ext travel Kings. You'd notice while off-roading of course, but you shouldn't notice the extra travel while driving on the road, lol...

With the std shocks, the total travel is the same, and lifting it just puts the ride height at different levels within that total travel. So you lift it an inch, you get 1" less down travel, and 1" more up travel.

With the ext travel, you can lift it an inch, and keep the same amt of down travel, and get 1 more inch up travel too.

    Hope that makes sense...

That said, even the std travel Kings will out perform the OME shocks, by, like, a lot... Even if the travel is the same, the way the shocks use that travel is vastly superior.

You may not *need* UCAs with the ext travel shocks, but it certainly helps. I have total chaos uniballs, and I figured better safe than sorry as the uniballs do provide more articulation ability than standard BJs.

I also got a diff drop kit to accompany my ext travel shocks, which angles the front doff down slightly. It doesn't fully correct the CV angles for the lift, but for $20-$30, it's cheap easy insurance to help prolong the life of your CVs. I don't have more than 2" of total lift, but I wanted to ensure that my CVs were as good as possible with the extra droop.

The other thing is what is your current setup driving style, etc..., and what's your budget? Lot's of people will tell you to stretch your budget and get the best you can possibly afford (buy once cry once). I'm a little different with the suspension. With how much better a set of 5100s (or teh OME set) perform over stock, those are a totally reasonable approach for *most* people. Most people don't *need* $1500 coilovers, but they can afford them and they like the bling factor, so... out goes the credit card.

For me, I spent 6 or so years with 5100s and a very mild 1" lift. As a daily driver it worked great. I couldn't justify the expense on Kings when it didn't see that much off-road time. Now, it's my trail truck so it's getting some more TLC in the suspension dept. I don't regret spending the money on the 5100s though. At the time it's what made sense and what I could afford.

The other thing not often mentioned is that the high end shocks need more maintenance (rebuilds) than a lower end shock, so that's an extra expense, too.

Totally does thanks for the explanation. Well trying to just do it once and done it might make sense just to get UCA.

What set up do you have ?

Ext droop with uni ball. What kind of leafs do you have ?

    Also any pics ?

+1 for UCAs - worth it in the long run and makes the ext travel more usable on the trail.

@jbrandt hit the nail on the head. 5100/OME kits are awesome without a doubt. However, run down a washboard/bumpy dirt road at a good clip and you will notice that the 2.5" King/Fox/ADS may be stiff feeling on the road but man do they feel good in their natural habitat. But, as we all must, ask yourself is it worth the additional cost? For example a full OME kit with Dakars is roughly the same as just the King/Fox/ADS Coilovers. There are plenty of people who wheel the piss our of their rigs with 5100 and OME Kits without issue. All about budget and where you want to go with your truck. Good luck, can't go wrong either way.

King Ext travel coils with total chaos UCAs and a diff drop. Energy Suspension poly LCA and steering rack bushings, CBI DIY front bumper and Warn 10k winch.

Back is still mostly stock with 5100s and shackles for about a 1" lift, stock leafs. Blew my budget on the front, lol. The plan is Deaver J59s.

Confused on your pictures. In one picture you have manual hubs, and on the bottom on you have wheels with center caps. Is this before/after a manual hub conversion?

Eventually gonna upgrade to some ext travel kings in the front. When you bought yours, where did you get them from? DSM?

Yep, downsouthmotorsports. I think I mentioned earlier that it looks like the price has gone up though. I think I paid like 950 for mine, they're running more like 1300 now.

I originally wanted camburg UCAs but they were "out of stock for the forseable future" so the guy gave me a deal on TC's...

Damn yea that's a steal. Gotta let the wallet recover before a set of kings happen. Just checked and the ext travel 2.5's are going for around $1400 rn.....

What are your thoughts on the resi vs non resi's?

Yeah, not sure why they were that price, but I had to jump on them.

Depends on what kind of driving you do and how much you want to stretch your budget. I went non-resi because I do more slow trail type driving than wide open desert type stuff. I do like to go fast, but it was never to the point that I could feel my 5100s fading. So if those didn't fade, the non-resi Kings wouldn't either.

Gotcha. I like to do a little bit of everything, but i'm shooting to build a setup that can handle some of the fast stuff too.
But then again i'm sure the non-resi's would be more than enough for what I am looking for. My OME nitrochargers & 881's aren't really up to the task of going quickly over any washboard. It feels like my truck wants to rattle apart when i've tried. I'm sure the oil is probably pretty cooked at this point too.
