Funny, I finally rode in my friend’s 4Runner today. Not much room and definitely not a truck. Just keep in mind, you’ll never have a truck and only an SUV

I have had both, and after 4 4Runners came back to a Tacoma. I love it, and only thing about the 4R is having a covered storage area in the back , if that matters. When I had to haul kids around, the 4R was perfect, but now, if I need to hual anyone, they can sit in the back, and more than enough room for most. It comes down to what you need, and will be happy with.

Drove an '18 4runner SR5 recently as a rental. It's definitely more comfortable/spacious inside for longer trips. I had a chance to take it off road while I had it and it did pretty well with just ATRAC. The engine and exhaust sound better too.

That's about where it ends though. I wasn't a fan of 4runners wallowy ride.. felt like driving a boat whereas Taco feels tighter. Interior is also pretty basic for the price.

Tacoma gets points for better fuel economy, and nicer interior. And while you can get reasonably comfortable inside it for longer trips, it's not quite the highway cruiser the 4runner is. Tacoma feels more mission-oriented... drive out, git r dun, and drive back. It's good at that.

Bottom line I guess it depends on what you plan to use it for. For me, the Taco is perfect for everything I need to do.

You always lose money, unless its a classic / exotic car, etc., whether that's on the fees, taxes, trade, equity you already built in / interest paid. That being said if you can afford it and aren't happy then go for it. I will say having driven both (ex had a 4runner for the 2 years we dated), the 4runner is more comfortable and solid build wise, while the Tacoma is more feature packed / updated but not as solidly built and not quite as comfortable. Question is do you need a truck?

My vote is unless you need a bed it’s not worth it to go Tacoma and if you have kids or regular riders in the back for longer runs it’s worth going 4 runner. I think it’s 8 or 9 extra inches in the back for leg room. I love my Tacoma and don’t plan to sell it, unless the new gen of the tundra is amazing and even then only after a few years to work stuff out

Does the 4runner keep the same value over time though? If OP can use the bed and other truck features, he might benefit in the long run.

If I didn't need a truck fairly often I would definitely be in a 4Runner.

I'm seriously thinking about a 2019 4Runner off road for this reason. Manual transfer case, last year without any TSS crap while retaining the 4.0 dual VVTI and 5 speed A750.

2020 has TSS. 2021 will have the 3.5 probably. Or god forbid unibody.

2019 4Runner OR! The last of a legendary truck.

Yep, I just got my LT at work to jump on one for that reason, 2021 redesign and TSS for 2020, the 2019s will only hold their value that much better over the newer ones.

Funny how people are complaining about how a TRUCK rides like a truck.

In that case I'd stick with the 4runner unless a bed is necessary.

Only the 3rd Gens. The 1st Gen is the noisiest machine ever made, you won’t hear a peep. The 2nd Gens half the fucking truck takes a shit but the fan bois are still ejactulating into their mouths about the 4.0 and it’s mystical 500 lbs torque at 1000 rpm

Prediction: The depreciation on the 2018 and 2019 4runners is gonna be insanely low 3-5 years from now.

I bet you'll be able to sell one to a private party, run the numbers, and figure out that it cost you about $150 a month to own that truck (assuming you bought it outright).
