Sorry but those are semantics. If I buy a brand-new pickup for $40,000 I expect it to meet my expectations.

I can’t speak for anyone who has only driven Toyotas for the past 20 years. But I can say that most other automakers seem to offer significantly better automatics and, apparently, better engines, too. Will they last 250,000 miles? Maybe, maybe not. But they drive a LOT better. And that’s all I’m talking about.

Normally I wouldn’t make such a fuss about an automatic transmission. As far as I am concerned all automatics are varying shades of grey. I’m not even going to bring up the sweet new 8-speed transmission on Rams and Jeeps. My last few Wranglers had an old 5-speed that was developed by Mercedes in the 1990s: it was robust, it shifted fine, and it always knew what gear to be in relative to the motor. I didn’t expect it to drive like a race car because that’s not what it was, but the transmission did what it had to do, nothing more, nothing less. And that’s all I needed.

By contrast this automatic feels like it was calibrated by an engineering flunky: it doesn’t want to downshift; when it finally does it goes so far that it sends the engine howling, and then it can’t wait to upshift again. And it would be awesome if all this drama at least delivered some oomph...but it doesn’t even do that.

Yeah, I’m going to try that next time I refill. Hopefully that helps.

My problem is that the previous owner probably drove it like an old lady for the first 14,000. :ballchain:

I find myself manually shifting it (I do the same thing with my 2015 Highlander XLE).

Recently, my wife and I took a 2,260+ mile trip to Northern Utah and back, our first trip in my 2016 Tacoma Limited 4x4. On the way back, we stopped at Cedar Breaks, Brian Head, Bryce Canyon & Zion. Up and down the mountain roads! If I let it shift itself, it would just lug the engine. I prefer to keep in in fourth, unless I'm on level ground or going down hill, and even then I was keeping it out of 5th & 6th to help control the speed without having to sit on the brakes all the time!

Didn't have time to try any of the trails using the 4x4, maybe next time.

Money is an issue, but if I can get some extra, I just might be tempted to do the OVTune on it.

You're going to get a lot smoke blown up your ass with regards to the first part of your post, but as someone who has owned a lot of Toyota trucks and 4x4s since the 80s I can unequivocally say their engines and trannies are not their selling points. The 4.0 was/is a dog, the 22R was a fucking dead dog, the 3.4 was a retarded dog and none of the autos are on par in terms of sophistication and smoothness with their competitors. The 4.0 in my daughter's Xterra beats any Tacoma or 4Runner V6 I've ever driven - hands down.

The selling point is that they go forever on little maintenance and their resale value is the tits. They are also fairly easy to wrench on. However, this is a forum where people routinely fuck up putting on skid plates or changing their oil, so take those bitch threads with a grain of salt.

The Tacoma does a lot better if you keep it in "S4" around town and "S5" on the freeway and keep the ECT button on. This is no different than the 68RFE in my Cummins that suffers from the same shit and is kept in "tow/haul" mode to make it livable despite having almost 1000 ft-lbs of torque.

Toyota fanboys are a curious breed. They convince themselves that the 4.0 and 3.4 and the 22R are legendary, yet ignore that the 22R would literally lose speed pointed downhilll with a tailwind. There is a romanticization of old things I suppose because, well, they're old. My FJ80 has a hell of a time getting out of it's own fucking way, but there are people on this forum that think its the apogee of automotive excellence. My son's 2012 Tacoma Sport has the interior of a rental car, the wheel arches designed by someone with a depth perception problem, the oomph of a poodle fart and the gas mileage of a 6.2 chevy.

If you accept a Toyota for what it is, then you will be satisfied. You will probably get a lot of worry free miles and get top dollar when you sell it. If you buy the bullshit that these trucks have had or have sophisticated and responsive drivetrains, then you will be sorely disappointed. They never fucking have. Never.

Funny you should mention a Colorado, just for the hell of it I checked out a couple of their forums. If anybody here thinks Tacos have issues, check out their forums, hardly anything positive, all kinds of transmission lawsuits, I was really surprised to see how minor most of our issues are compared to the Colorado...

They put it in a minivan - so there are cement heads on this forum who will claim it's not a proper truck engine.o_O

Buying a Colorado implies a celebratory dinner at Applebee's and two Bud Lights to wash it down. I think they throw in a free Luke Bryan music file (undelete-able) already on the head unit, but see your parts dept for you bonus gift and large bowtie rear window decal or some real tree steering wheel covers. Act now don't delay.

Indeed, the new-for 2018 8-speed automatic that comes with the 3.6 V6 has a shudder that resulted in a class-action suit.

The 5-speed automatic in the base pickup and the 6-speed automatic on diesel models appear to be pretty stout.

This has nothing to do with accepting that you love your truck. If you like how your Tacoma drives, that’s awesome. High five!

Still that doesn’t help those of us who don’t like how our Tacomas drive. I come on here looking for practical suggestions on how to fix/improve the way my $40,000 truck drives. I don’t come looking to be brainwashed into believing that my Tacoma is wonderful to drive when I know it isn’t.

Thankfully, despite all the butt hurt on this forum, I got some useful tips I plan to try to see if I can get my Tacoma to drive better. Fingers crossed.

I wish you success in that because, it is a wonderful feeling to look forward to driving your truck every time you climb in.
