Hi guys, I just got a 2005 Tacoma and the transmission has been sticking going into first and has troubles linking up in third. It's gotten slightly better since running redline mt-90 but still has issues.

My question is can you run a later year transmission '09+ in a '05 or should I just search for a newer 05 transmission to replace it.

as far as i know all 2nd taco gen 6spd trans are the same (so long as its 4x4 or prerunner to match your truck). They did some fixes for throwout bearing, but if you are in that far may as well do it proper with a urd setup.

Are you talking to a whole conversion or just the throwout bearing lol

I've seen members post on here about replacing 05-06 transmissions with newer models, probably 2012 and up. As far as I know they are the same as far as bolting up, with improvements to the internals.

OP, actually the 6 speed was on major revision #3 (so a total of 3) as of about '12 or early '13. Moreover, not only have there been the major revisions but an incredible number of individual part revisions since '05 to the extent that many major internal components from later rears simply will not fit in the '05. In other words forget about trying to rebuild the thing and upgrade its internals to the revised parts.

You likely have an issue with the shift keys and springs on the third gear syncro, or a bent shift fork., or both. The 1st gear problem is likely a bent fork as a later revision has cast iron/steel instead of cast aluminum.

My advise to you is to not spend any time or money on the thing and look for a much later version such as a '12+. The last revisions came in the fall of 2014 with some tiny parts.

I think that was OP's plan all along to just swap the whole trans for a newer working one.

Correct. Unfortunately I’m too far in to tuck tail now and grab a newer truck

Also I've noticed the fj cruiser 07-09 uses a 4x4 6 speed MT that people apparently seemed to love could this be viable?

Its essentially the same 6 speed but has a different part number likely because 6th gear has a slightly different ratio.

EDIT: All gear ratios are identical except specifically the Taco has a 6th ratio of 0.85 and the FJ 0.80. Not enough difference to notice but might make a possible substitute if you could find a low mile used one. If you want, holler and I will look at the part numbers for both bell housings and a few other things to see if it might bolt up and be nearly plug-and-play.
