I’ve also got those stems buried deep in hopes to prevent the borers from landing on them to lay their eggs !
That big zucchini is about ready to flower and there are two tiny zucchini starting :broccoli:

Hope my garden sustains over these few days... never used the metal tubs until now and I have heard that they get hot and you have to water more... well it was 96 yesterday suppose to be 98 today and high 80’s Thursday. I know there are things that like the heat but I’m not trying to kill my garden before it really gets going. :annoyed::annoyed:

Also damn tomato plants have already outgrown the cages I put around them...

Cherry tomatoes they seem to be very bushy and out of control in their cages
My bigger tomatoes are flowering now and looking really healthy and I am happy. As far as height wise goes on those expecting to maybe get 5 feet tall I hope

I wonder if there is anything that you could wrap around those metal tubs to deflect the light like white plastic or something. If you have ever noticed the top of school buses have white on them to keep them cooler maybe that would be worth looking into

I have seen a couple of cherry tomatoes already starting. The big tomato’s dont have thing yet other then a couple of flowers. I think I’m just gonna but bigger cages on the way home and try to change them out.

Lol they super reflective already, being shiny metal
Maybe some light colored mulch could help
Some insulation would help @Toywoodsguy82 but I think figuring out a way to shade the containers without shading the plant would be ideal

Well my spring project for this year is coming along pretty well; I scrubbed all of the brush out of this stretch as soon as the ground was soft enough to pull stumps, rolled most of the rocks off out of the way, and tilled & graded everything over to make it more or less level. I've got buckwheat and clover planted as cover crops to help keep it from growing back in with whips, and those are finally getting started in good shape. The buckwheat in particular has gone nuts in the last week, some of it's nearly ready to start flowering already.

    20190611_190815_resized.jpg

I've also got some smaller boxes planted with squash and pumpkins, with the intention that they can take advantage of the Southern exposure by the roadside (it runs almost directly East-West), and that they can sprawl over the freshly cleared ground. (This whole stretch used to look like the patch by the telephone pole, to give you an idea of how thickly it was grown in)

I wouldn't worry about it. There is a pretty good volume of soil in those tubs. Just water them as needed. The soil temp will probably be higher than the ground soil, but it won't be high enough to really hurt anything. About the only problem I could see is stuff that likes cold, lettuce spinach and things like that, may struggle a bit, and be quicker to bolt. Tomatoes and other stuff that likes warm soil will probably love it.

I have 2-3” of rock about 12” of straw an the rest is soil in the tubs. I have 4 types of lettuce growing

Also the tomato’s are in there own pots because I ran out of space in the tub’s. 9DD8C5B1-4EDE-45FF-B418-11CDBA246017.jpg

Sounds like the tubs would hold a lot of water in the rocks and straw, that's good. It will take them a long time to dry out. I would watch the tomatoes that are in small pots. They will dry out quick, not much volume there to hold water. If the soil gets completely dry, and they sit in the sun they will die quick.

I water pretty much every night even if it’s just a little bit.

My garden isn’t doing well. Too many cool nights. Broccoli got hammered again to the point it is going to be replaced with beans this weekend.

I doubt cool nights hurt your Broccoli, it likes cool weather. Probably something else causing it to do poorly.

I'm showing pictures of my experimental garden because my regular garden is currently about 3 weeks behind, lol. The only things thriving so far this spring are the Chives and the grapevines, and that's because both of them are more or less invincible once they get established.

The garden is doing pretty well. Tomatoes, green beans, red lettuce, yellow squash, and onions are great. I've had some pest problems with my zucchini, cucumbers, radishes, and basil though. Had to replant the zuccinni and one of the cucumbers because something had eaten all the leaves. The picture of the cucumber was a couple hours after I had just planted it. Could be bugs, birds, or squirrels. Used some Captain Jacks spray for the bugs, and a spray I made from garlic and cayenne pepper for the others. Seems to be working. Strange because I've never had a pest problem until this yearIMG_1452.jpg IMG_1444.jpg IMG_1443.jpg .

My biggest issue with pests/ insects is the squash vine borer and cucumber beetles ( spotted)
