Should i trade 4Runner for Tacoma

I've driven both and HANDS DOWN the 4Runner is better buit, drives way better and has a better engine and transmission. If you need a pickup truck get a 2nd gen Tacoma a 2014 or 2015 not a 3rd gen tacoma

 

Body on frame part time 4x4 is a truck to me. Lot's of TRUCKS don't come with an open bed. That's called a pickup truck.

 

Get the Pro with the manual and never look back. I love mine. Much better than the 4Runner IMO. The manual makes the biggest, and most fun, difference.

 

I have a '17 4runner SR5 for my wife and I have a '17 TDR OR (auto) both 4x4. Love both of them. Very different driving experiences between the two. More headroom and upright driving position in the 4runner as well as way more rear seat room. 4.0 is smooth but doesn't get it moving very quick. As everyone has mentioned, the tacoma shifts a lot, can hesitate figuring out what gear it wants to be in, but once you hit 3500 RPM there is a rush of power that you are not going to get in the 4.0 (good or bad your call). My tacoma gets better mileage on the highway. I have blindspot monitoring and rear sonar in my tacoma that I don't believe you can get in a 4runner. That being said, both great vehicles.

 

It's amazing how many people own 4runner's on this forum... and stick around this forum, waiting for threads like this so they can tell everyone about their 4runner.

 

I can't type for crap. I was trying to say my wife has a 4runner and I have a Tacoma. Only reason I would give an opinion on both.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the engine, It is just under geared from factory.

 

The very first 4Runner was a toyota pickup with the rear window/sheet metal removed, carpets and seats bolted into the bed with a removable camper shell.

 

What does that have to do with anything?

Nope. Keep the 4Runner and get yourself a 1st Gen if you want a Tacoma.
4Runners have a solid drive train and they are still built in Japan.

We have a 5thGen 4Runner and first thing to go is that squishy ride.
Get better tires. (Duratracs 255/75R17 @ 35 psi) Replaced the shocks with 5100's front's set at .85" and Eibach coils for the rear (+1").

Much better ride after that. You can go 275/70R17 and will fit without a lift and zero rubbing but tires at this size tends to be E load which is stiff.

 

How come all the newer generation 4runner owners liberally regurgitate the word "refined" around like they are talking about fine wine palates or something? This is the situation everytime a 4runner bro chimes in. Guess who the 4runner bro is

 

If you are reasonably happy with your 4R, I'd keep it. There is a cost to trading, if nothing else have to pay taxes/title on the new purchase, which in the state of NE is ~8.5% of net purchase price.

The key points for the Taco are truck bed, available in a manual, and superior tow capacity. I tow a 3000+ lb camper and would not want to stress the vehicle any more than that--the Taco gets the job done, but it's work. I imagine the 4R would really drag towing something that weight. Also personally I like the look and interior styling of the Tacoma better. (Although when I see one of those Storm Trooper 4R's I get a bit envious.)

I haven't seriously priced a 4R, but it seems to me to get the same trim and options one has to spend quite a bit more. For instance, the 4R OR starts at $38,400.

Having said all that, if you want a real truck and especially with a manual, you'll want the Tacoma.
