Tranny fluid change Help

Hello world!

I've tried searching but couldn't find anything useful. I'm trying to do a drain and fill on my 02 tacoma v6 auto transmission for the first time. I got under the car and saw the drain plug but couldn't find the fill plug. Can someone describe where it is? Thanks in advance!

Although I have the 4cyl engine, I do believe its the same for the first gen v6's. You fill through the dipstick.

yup dipstick, (((on my 2.7 liter 4 cyl 3RZFE)))its kinda a pain to see how much you have in there, you check the dip with the engine running but the fluid appears to be splashed up, making a good reading a little hard to do..

The Haynes manual tells you exactly how much you will need to do if you can eyeball the fluid containers and make a good estimate. (be sure all is drained, I don't think that is possible without a pump) Someone please correct me if I am incorrect on that.

Ditto to all. Fill in dipstick. Owner's manual AND Toyota told me I needed 2.1 Qts for a 'pan drain' Turns out I needed almost 4 Qts. Ive done this 2-3 times and shift performance has improved. Im using Toyota T-IV ATF. Get a extra drainplug crush washer while youre at the dealer to prevent leaks. They are cheap

 

My dipstick calls for dextron III. Is your old fluid T-IV? I cant seem to find Dextron III anywhere. I tried going to the dealer but they dont have any individual bottles for sale only barrels for dealership use only. Is it okay to mix T-IV with the drain and fill?

Use whatever the dipstick says. Some are Dex III (4 cyl?), some are T-IV (6cyl?). I get my ATF fluid from Toyota dealer

 

nnnnnnnnnnnnoooooooooooo dont use the Toyota T-IV unless your tranny calls for it!!!!!!!!!!!! That stuff will ruin your tranny!!!!!!

I called toyota to verify. I just did mine a few times to get a good fluid change. They factory fill with valvoline. They recommended that if your dipstick says dex II or III get the valvoline dex/merc thats what they fill with at the dealer if you have them service your tranny. I even bought the fluid from the parts counter at the Toyota dealership. $3.99qt Pretty good price, It was actually more expensive at Autozone.

mine took a hair over 4 quarts buy 5 and you will be fine. A month or so after you change your fluid go buy another 4qts and do another change and you will be good!

 

Really? Sounds kind of wierd that toyota would use valvoline dex/merc. I was hesitant about buying it at a local auto parts store but now I'll go ahead and buy. Good information. Thanks.

 

I felt the same thats why I called Toyota! If you look at the back of the dex/merc you will see that it says that it will meet all of the requirements of dexIII
