I’m about to change my brakes and rotors on my 2016 Tacoma Sport with OEM brakes and rotors. I’m at 45k miles and down to about 20%, is this normal? I’ve searched threads and seen them lasting to about 70-75k.

Also is there any brake in procedure or recommendations for an easy instal?

(Located in Oceanside, Ca if anyone wants to help out)

I'll probably regret asking this but, why are you replacing your rotors? Are they gouged or scratched up or warped?

I guess, depending on how you drive. If they are truly 20%, you have over 10k left on them though.............

That's more common and reflects more hwy miles and smoother driving in most cases.

You should not need rotors. A pad change should suffice. Just be sure to lube the proper points and look for any unusual pad wear (like lopsided) or grooving on the rotors.

Follow a bedding procedure for the new pads. Don't know what that is? Google it. Too many don't, and are frustrated with their brakes in a short period of time.

Be sure to pull the rear drums, clean, adjust and lube while your hands are all grimy anyway.

Any lube you recommend for that? Looks like a lot of googling in my forthcoming.

I would bet that you being an MT has alot to do with this.

Our ability to hold the gears that we want or need and use the engine to slow us down (also no tq converter) helps a ton with pad life.

I had a manual lexus is300 that needed its first brake job at 100k. Phenomenal.

On thr other hand, my moms 94 land cruiser seems to need front pads every 35k.

People have vastly different braking habits so longetivity can vary between drivers.

Mine look very similar at 60k with a manual. At this point I wouldn't be surprised to go 150k on these..

How exactly are torque converters related to brake pad wear?

It sounds like saying someone with leather seats gets better fuel economy.

Engine braking with a manual and automatic aren't the same...

I understand that. But how does a torque converter play in to that?

If the engine is high rpm and engine braking, you'll get better efficiency w a clutch, instead of spinning through oil.

Understood. The point I was making to begin with was how does that affect brake pad life?

How does a torque converter increase the rate of brake pad wear?
How does that increased wear (If Any) compare to different braking habits of the average driver?

I’m just saying, I’ve never heard anyone say an advantage of manual transmissions are their lower brake pad use.

U see a light turn red, u use your manual to down shift and slow down, and don't touch the brakes. Automatic doesn't increase pad wear, just wouldn't conserve it as well, Along with the fact most people aren't downshifting their automatics.

I think you're just looking at it from the wrong angle, plus I think he's hypothesising, correctly I think, though.

I believe they are warped, if I press down on the brakes with some good force they “jump” a little. Also had a mechanic take a look just to insure.
