Hey TW, any recommendations on a gps tracker? I’m looking for one I can place anywhere on the car with a long battery life. I hear there’s some out there that have no fees ever, but not a deal breaker. I don’t care about all the features, just location. Ideas? Thanks

I’m guessing it’s hooked up to the truck? Is there a monthly fee? Does it work with OEM?

Does it notify you if the alarm goes off?

    Some do. GPS/alarm/auto start/pages you/long battery life(2 months+)no fees(questionable). All the ones I’ve seen with these features have a monthly/annual fee

8 months after they broke the app, I once again can see the status of my vehicle(outbound communication) with the MyCar Controls app (available in branded versions, including 12v Solutions). The inbound communications worked so if I told it to lock the doors, it would, I just wouldn't get the verification back.

That is also another branded version.

My app worked great at the beginning of last November. 2 weeks later it didn't. I notified their tech support. I also noticed their app had been updated between the time I knew it was working and the time I knew it wasn't working properly.

Spent time and effort trying to get it to work following their direction.
I have a nice collection of e-communications with them. They stopped communicating with me about 4 months ago.
A week or so ago I noticed it working. I noticed the app had been updated the day before.
They didn't bother to tell me that. Great customer service MyCarControls.

I realize getting an app to work across many devices is difficult. But they totally ignored the info about it worked before their update and didn't after their update.

And 8 months without a correctly working service that I had paid for with the product purchase.
Good customer service would offer to extend that for the 8 months I wasn't fully able to use their product.

EDIT Let me add that as a courtesy, I notified them that is was once again working properly.

Why do you want to track your truck, in the event that it’s stolen?

To notify the Police where your truck is so they can get it. Or if you’re a heavy pipe hitting honest citizen you may want to get it yourself.

I like OPs idea of hiding it anywhere on the vehicle. If I were a car thief, first thing I'd check is if anything is plugged into the diagnostic port and pull it out.

You could get a dash cam like the thinkware f800 pro which has tracking ability and accident notification. You can set a geofence to notify you when the vehicle is out of a certain area.

I guess I lead a boring life. Getting my truck stolen is not on my radar at all, that’s why I have insurance.

The choice is quite huge. And something specific is challenging to advise since everyone has different tastes in the design or use of the device, and the budget is also different. But I have been using TomTom Truckers GPS for quite a long time. Of all the machines I have had, I like it best so far. But who knows, maybe I will find a better one. But at the moment, there is nothing better. And I am happy with all of its features. You can look at reviews about it before buying and decide for yourself. But again, so far, there is nothing better.

Agreed. My Taco, if it were stolen could be replaced easily and I'm the only one who drives it so I know where it goes. However I do own two classic cars which would be impossible to replace so I may add Trackers on them.

On a related note, I have the myQApp on my phone and Garage Door opener which allows me to open and close my garage door remotely but more importantly sends me an alert when the door opens. That's handy information for a guy who lives alone to have.
