Took the girlfriend to the creek last night. Hot sticked her a couple times. She popped the first one off, but was able to land the second one. She thought it was pretty cool to watch them come up and sip the chubby off the top

Debating picking up a used abel super 7 with solid frame - worth $400? I have an abel super 9 now that I bought used for $450 but in retrospect it probably wasn't as great a deal as I thought.

Hit some more remote ponds today and did well...all native brookies in the 8-12" range. Water is still really cold and the fish were cruising shoreline looking for an easy meal. The highlight of my day and what makes these trips so special, was watching (for over 30 minutes) a young cow moose with her very new calf frolic along the shore line in the shallow areas. That little bugger went in neck deep at one point with mom always mere inches behind. Of course I forgot my phone/camera in my truck. Was in my kayak tucked behind some rocks about 100' away. They never knew I was there. Special moment.

And I must say, after fly-fishing from a canoe for over 30 years, fishing from a kayak really sucks. About the only positive thing is the ease of dragging it into remote ponds. Back to canoe pour moi.

What kind of kayak are you fishing out of? And what didn’t you like about it? I’ll say not all yaks are created equal. I fish out of a Old Town Predator MX. It’s a sit on top, with a super comfortable high/low seat option. And the ability to stand and cast very easily!

Hmmm. I’ve been wanting a kayak to replace my canoe. Single manning a 14’er alone sucks. Why do you not like the kayak?

LL Bean Manatee 10 Angler (made by Perception). Not a sit on top, but has a nice big open cockpit. Just too low, too many things for line to get caught on, have to move everything out of the way. I like things readily available. Can't change seating position easily to change casting direction when rises are all around you (I'm usually anchored).

Like I said, it was super easy to drag into some ponds (one was 1/2 mile). That would have been a bitch with a canoe. I'll still keep it for those situations, but I'll not use it nearly as much as I had hoped. It also paddles great and is much faster than my canoe.

For me, it just doesn't match the versatility of a canoe. I have a Mad River Explorer 15' in Royalex (picked it up the year before they stopped making Royalex canoes) that only weighs 60lbs. It's got the flat wooden/nylon webbing seats, so when I'm solo, I just use the bow seat as my stern seat and it rides nice & flat as I'm closer to the center. Standing is a breeze.

    Just my 2 cents.

Plus nothing glides across the water with the grace and elegance of a canoe lol
