Dare I even jump in on the conversation?? Why not?

I live in the Denver metro area at an altitude between 5000-6000 feet. I have the 93 octane base tune, and I pull up to the pump and put in 91 octane fuel, and I don't really care about all the people telling me I'm going to blow up my engine because Mat over at OVT has marketed that particular tune as being for use with 93 octane fuel. I'm not getting codes, stumbling, or knocking due to detonation running the 93 tune on 91 octane fuel at altitude.

What I DO get is a truck that drives like a scalded cat. Thing is, I don't putz around town to the grocery store and back, I drive like a maniac up and down the interstate, and now I have a truck that can get out of its own way, and incidentally gets a little bit better fuel economy.

My overall fuel economy has gone from 17.x mpg to 20.x mpg. At current fuel prices, I'm saving approximately $100/yr even though I have to run premium fuel.

Take what I say for what it's worth, one random dude on the internet's opinion. I'm happy as hell with the tune, and I can't wait until 2.0 comes out.

    Interesting.

Not sure if I would ever do that but then again, living at 8,000 feet in Colorado and traveling nationally for my work, I will see on an annual basis elevations ranging from 13,000 to minus -282 feet for an annual project in Death Valley. So very well controlled A/F-R's are pretty key and even then, I can have my ECU piggyback on my S/C'd 4.0 momentarily correcting for high boost with a limp mode blip at sea level.

But unless I can eventually go with an S/C on the Gen-3 in the future, I would never expect nearly the amount of power I get from my 4.0 so I think a reliable stage-1 tune (OVtune 91 map) will make the truck fairly usable as a daily driver which is all I can really expect from the platform at this time.

The prospective gains from a stage-1 tune are what is making me decide to get a 2019 in a couple months. I look forward to it.

Does this fix the terrible hard shift points in the AT. The awful rev hang before it slams into the next gear making the whole truck shimmy. The throttle lag that is a good second to respond after pushing the pedal. The lack of any power below 3500 rpm. PS a high revving truck is dumb unless you are racing it. I absolutely hate the way this thing drives and after the TSB and 8500 miles it still drives like absolute shit. Gonna trade out next year probs(cant wait). But want it to actually drive normal and not have to pray it gets totaled on a daily basis.

2017 TRD OR, Nitto’s 285/70r17, ARE cap, been on OVTune since ver 1.04, now ver 1.05.
Ran 3 different tunes on ver 1.05.
Settled on 87 Base. Runs great on 87 octane, super responsive, smooth shifting, cruise control which I use a lot traveling in Texas is fixed as in shifts like it should in hills/overpasses. Stock was a shifting up and down nightmare on stock.
I buy my local gas at Sam’s Costco. They only offer 87 and 93 octane, 93 octane being $2.67 as of a few days ago.
So my real sweet spot is 87 Base Tune with 93 octane.
And when I travel and can’t get to a Sam’s etc and don’t want to pay premium prices, I do 87 octane.
Bottom line OVTune made my Taco drive the way it’s suppose to with a V6, pedal super responsive, reacts immediately, especially driving in Houston traffic and hauling ass on the freeway, cruise control works the way it’s suppose to, AND I do get anywhere from 1 to 2.5 mpg increase depending on how I drive. But I didn’t buy my truck for gas mileage......
I don’t have to use ECT either since the 87 Base OVTune is more than enough.
    Worth $700?
    Yes!
My truck is great to drive now, love how it responds and gets up and goes when needed.
No longer that stock potatoe masher response and nightmare multi-shifting cruise control that was insane on trips!
Toyota ‘designed/modified/optimized’ the V6 for gas mileage, not for driveability. Toyota fu#*ed it up majorly.
    OVTune saved it!
Sucks I have to spend another $700 bucks to make my Tacoma drive way better, the way it should drive.
But stock was a frikin stupid nightmare after spending $36K for my Tacoma for it to drive like chit.

On the fence about spending the $700?
I spent more on Nitto tires than the tune....
Same for those FN Pro wheels.

OVTune improves a lot about the way the Taco drives, particularly the shifting, but doesn't fix the one second throttle lag. Last I asked, Mat said this was in the works.

Wish I could say the same. I’ve got the TSB and OVTune and if I push the pedal the taco still falls flat.

Yep, they absolutely do.. Two trucks of the same M/Y, running the same file with the same octane gas, and in very similar environmental conditions can act quite differently.

This seems to defy logic WRT a mass produced vehicle.

No, it's not all driver perception either.

Had the delay before the tune, no delay now. 91 performance. Also gone is that scary lag where you step on the gas to enter traffic or get through an intersection from a stop......praying you don't get hit

Are you referencing 1st to 2nd gear shift?

I have 4.30's and an AT...probably will do either 4.88's or 5.29's eventually because I plan to move up to 35's.

The 4.30's work well with 33's. I only did it because I have less than $700 invested in the gear swap.

Just to further clarify, the 4.30's in AT with 33's is essentially stock gearing.

If I had to do it over again, I would have just saved up more cash and done 4.88's.

I just loaded it and tuned my truck to the 93 base tune. I've been running 93 octane for a while now because I noticed it was giving me better mileage than 87 on the 87 tune. Figured I would just run the 93 tune and see how it goes. Well.. not so good. I tuned it 93 base, cleared both learning values and let it idle for 10 miles. After idling I took it for a road test and it felt a little funny at first but figured it would smooth out (ran rough and shifted harsh). After about a mile the truck bucked a few times violently and then shifted into neutral and the CEL and brake override light came on. I was stuck in the middle of the road with the truck idling at 1500rpms by itself and wouldn't go anywhere. Thank god I brought my laptop because I had to tune back to stock to get it to move out of the 2 lane road I was stuck on. What caused this to happen? Now I am nervous to run the tune again..

Hope we can get this resolved it was not a fun experience.

Since 500 miles new, I’ve run the 1.05 and (latest versions) base 87 and 91 without any issues. Truck drives way better. I like both 87 and 91. Before purchasing the truck I had decided to buy the tune. It was part of my decision to buy a Tacoma. I get 20 or better mpg and it’s fun to drive. Could not be happier.

Sorry to hear about your experience. Nothing like a surprise like that to make your day.

My OVTune package is arriving in the mail today.
I plan on running 87 octane build. Your road test is making me re-think my plans. I think I'll bring my laptop to a giant parking lot and test the tune thoroughly there.

I'be been on 1.05 87 base for 6k and 1.5.1 for 600 miles and now I'm back to Stock (TSB)
1.5.1 shudder fix did not work for me.
1.5 was alright, but towards the end I started noticing getting stuck in 5th or 6th with that stock dead pedal feeling. Also elevated misfires on cold engine +TC shudder did stain the experience.
After flashing back and forth between 1.05 and 1.05.1 and resetting LVs, shifting became harsh and I started to get gear hunting while accelerating on freeways.

So I loaded Stock , reset LV's and honestly the truck drives much better than 1.05.
Shifting is smooth again; misfires went to single digits on my regular commute; ECU is dealing with TC shudder much better than 1.05. If the truck gets dumb again , I will simply reset LV's

I would not be worried, if you have any issues contact us. He's the first to have such issues on the base tune. Some trucks (rarely) have some additional issues that aren't present on 90 percent of these trucks. Most of the time is a combination of multiple OEM problems.
