Pakistan Flood

(CNN) -- The death toll from massive floods in Pakistan rose to 1,497 on Friday as U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon said the crisis is a "slow-motion tsunami" that is expected to grow.
The number of homeless as a result of flooding has doubled to 4 million.
Ban urged the international community to give more aid during a special fundraising meeting Thursday night.
"Make no mistake," he said. "This is a global disaster, a global challenge. It is one of the greatest tests of global solidarity in our times."
The U.N. secretary-general, who traveled to Pakistan last weekend to visit sites devastated by the disaster, said almost 20 million people need shelter, food and emergency care.
"That is more than the entire population hit by the Indian Ocean tsunami, the Kashmir earthquake, Cyclone Nargis, and the earthquake in Haiti -- combined," he said.
The United Nations has already appealed for $460 million over the next three months, Ban said, and although donors delivered more than a half, the available resources are not sufficient to meet the needs on the ground.
The European Commission has pledged 40 million euros ($51 million) since July 31 for the flood victims. It said it will mobilize an additional 30 million euros (about $38 million).
"This disaster is like few the world has ever seen. It requires a response to match," Ban said. "Pakistan needs a flood of support."
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who also attended the General Assembly meeting, announced an additional $60 million in U.S. aid. The funds bring to $150 million the amount pledged to Pakistan by the United States.
"I want the people of Pakistan to know: The United States will be with you through this crisis," she said. "We will be with you as the rivers rise and fall. We will be with you as you replant your fields and repair your roads. And we will be with you as you meet the long-term challenge to build a stronger nation and a better future for your families."
Clinton urged other nations to help the nation meet its funding goals.
Analysts have blamed "donor fatigue" for the delay in aid.
Pakistan has been on a seemingly constant round of donor needs -- to revive its feeble economy, to fight the Taliban and to recover from the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and the 2009 refugee crisis.

more importantly: since pakistan's government isn't exactly top rate, terror and militant groups like the taliban are stepping up and setting up aid camps. it's an attempt to look like the good guys and to bolster their recruiting efforts. afterall, afghanistan is pakistan's neighbor.

 

Good news is we're sending in people as well. I'm waiting on word to launch to head over there myself.

I wonder what the other European nations are doing? Its funny its always the US of A in the front lines when these things come. One moment we are "The great satan, death to America" guys the next moment we get calls to help them. I'm not complaining, just sayin.. you know? Oh well back to your regularly scheduled programming..

I noticed that for several days search engines such as Yahoo had a small portion where it says "Pakista Relief" under their logo/banner.

I have nothing against helping but good lord, after they got the aid they need, most of them are back in their old ways. Chanting: death to America, those swine eating infidels!!!' Its not amusing anymore.

 

here we go helping the enemy.

Pakistani flood victims' anger at US

There has been fighting in the camps, but anger is also directed at the West
Displaced people are camping everywhere. Shelters of canvas and plastic sheeting line the edges of the highways linking Islamabad to Peshawar in the north-west of the country.

The roads are raised, a precious strip of dry land in a sea of stagnant floodwater and thick mud.
I stopped at one makeshift camp and a group of men rushed forward as soon as I got out of the car, crowding round.

One was a thin-faced man in his 40s called Iftikhar.
He pointed to the swamped ground beyond the railway tracks and the remains of his village. His house had been badly damaged, he said.
Even though the waters were starting to recede, it was too unstable for him to move back there with his six daughters.
We desperately need help from the government, so we can rebuild," he told me.

He rolled back a sleeve and showed me the skin rash on his arm. "Everyone is in a bad state," he said. "If we don't get money, I don't know what will happen to us."

Others chimed in around him. Many sounded miserable and frustrated.
They were getting some food, they said, but their community had been knocked back about 25 years.
Sugar and flour was not enough - they needed new houses, new possessions, new books and supplies in the local school to replace everything they had lost.

Some criticised the government, saying the aid was not fairly distributed.
Others blamed the West, including the US, for failing to give enough help.
One man turned his anger on me: "What about your country?" he said, heatedly. "Why aren't you giving more?"

Elsewhere in the small camp, businessmen were handing out donations from the local community.
If there was not more support, they said, the security situation might worsen.
There has been fighting already in the camps, said one.
"We're doing so much to help the United States in the war on terrorism. Now we're in crisis and we expect help," said one of the businessman donors.
His colleague agreed: "Now's the time for them to prove their commitment to us."
In fact, the US is already the biggest single donor to the UN's emergency fund.

On Thursday, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced more aid. But in Pakistan, critics of the US still sound scathing.
Ayaz Amir, an MP in Nawaz Sharif's opposition party, said: "The United States is spending $5bn every month on the war in Afghanistan. That puts into context what they're giving us."
The implication is that if the US does not do much more, Pakistan's ability - and willingness - to support the US-led battle against Islamist insurgents will suffer.
Mr Amir added: "If Pakistan can't recover, then one thing which will be washed away is the so-called war on terror. This front will not be functioning."

this is my take on it as well. It actually kinda pissed me off seeing that damn Pakistan relief on yahoo.

 

Why are they not asking Mid-eastern countries like Saudi, Yemen, etc? Isn't Charity one of the five pillars of Islam? This is a great opportunity for them!

They could afford nukes but not help for their own during disasters? Sorry, that does not make sense.

 

I'll be happy to donate some old American History books that I have.
