I don't have smoked headlamps, I have the black/chrome housings with led bulbs and I did a light smoke on the side markers. I haven't got popped yet, (knock on wood).
I did one light coat on the side markers and after it dried they got a little darker. I found out with my first set of markers, I put 3 coats on and it was a mistake! It tells you on the can to use light even coats. With my second set I also masked off the orange reflector.

The main thing is to not make yourself stand out, and to not drive in a manner that gives LEOs more of an excuse to pull you over.

AFAIK, smoked lenses aren't the type of violation that will typically get you lit up, but it is something that once you're pulled over they can write you up for, especially if you're being a jackass to the officer.

I used VHT Nightshades. I think I got mine at Pep Boys but I'm pretty sure you can find it at any auto parts store, Amazon for sure. Just don't over do it, the picture of mine only has one coat. Initially it was lighter but when completely dry and set it got a tad darker so be carful.
