Oem head unit problem.

Hi everyone. Anyone had problems with your oem head unit? I got a 2019 with 500 miles on it and my front left channel keeps going in and out. I changed all the speakers but I don’t think it is from a poor connection or a defective speaker as both the door speaker and the tweeter go out at the same time. Also, I can make the channel come back if I raise the volume quite high and after it comes back I lower the volume and it plays for a while before going out again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you actually verify your speaker connections, or are you making assumptions? Did you replace the speakers, or did someone else do it?

 

I installed the speakers myself. I used to be an installer many years ago. I believe the connections aren't the problem because I can make them come back on when I turn the volume up high and then lower it back to normal. If it was a connection it wouldn't matter how loud you played it it would still be off.

That's not entirely true, it's AC voltage, and you can overcome a poor connection using higher voltage. Did you have any problems before replacing them?

 

Thats what I was going to say, pushing the speakers will create a "arc" to make a better connection. then after awhile that connection degrades and becomes open again.

 

Ok. But both the tweeter and the door speaker goes out at the same time. They are wired in parallel.

 

Yes, radio -> Tweeter -> woofer. If the Tweeter loses connection them the woofer does too

 

Not really. They are separate speakers in different locations running parallel. One in the dash and coaxs in the door. So if the radio is doing it then both will go out like it is doing. If it’s the speaker connection then only one would go out.

 

I highly doubt they are parallel at the stereo output. I don't know where they are tied together, I don't have one. Odds are one of the speakers has a 4 pin connector and that's where they are tied together so check the connection at that speaker.

This looks like a big fat "go look at the feed to the tweeter" to me.

As far as being somewhat argumentative, look man it's not me saying you did a crap job. We're just trying to help, but you have to be willing to go hands on when we make suggestions instead of pushing back. All you've done is expose the fact that you only half understand these things, which is fine... but damn bro just go look at it. I've been doing pro audio for 30 years and I still screw up wiring sometimes. A lot of times I just missed something I could have corrected while I was in there and poking around is what made it fail. Even the factory wiring isn't immune to scrutiny.

All evidence thus far points to an iffy connection feeding that channel and it's not likely at the HU. It could be just that a pin isn't fully seated. I didn't see that you answered my question about having issues before the speakers were swapped out so I'm still going on the assumption that this issue began after work was done, which tells me that the speaker wiring needs to be verified before moving on.

 

Ok Guys. I’m not trying to be argumentative just for the heck of it. And I appreciate you all trying to help. It’s just that in my years of installing car stereos (many years ago) I’ve never heard of a loose connection coming back when the volume is turned up.

Being said that, I did what you told me to do and redid the connection to the tweeter and front door speaker (which are connected in parallel). Now I’ll wait and see if it goes out. I should know after driving it around.

Yeah man I saw you mention that parallel thing, I promise. What I'm saying is if this connection is poor, it will definitely cause the symptom you are describing.

 

Ok. I take it this to show me how it is wired even though the colors of the wires aren’t same as mine. And the tweeter did have 4 wires like shown. The guy at Crutchfield told me which ones to use.

 

I think that's a Tundra schematic but it had what I needed.

 

Well guys since redoing my wire connection it hasn’t dropped out yet. I believe the problem was what you all said. I admit that I was wrong and thanks to all for your help.
