Okay, just got a new-to-me 2005 doublecab PreRunner SR5 and have those horrible steel wheels with the chrome plated hubcaps on them. They're sporting the Dunlop AT20's, I believe. I know this question is posed a lot and I've tried to get this answered using the search feature, but I'm not getting my answer. Likely, because I'm not asking it correctly. So, in the interest of adding to the endless barrage of "what size wheels/tires will fit"; here we go!

Really, my first question is what, if any, difference is there in the ride height, clearances between the 4x4 Tacoma and the PreRunner 4x2 Tacoma? Aside from what wheels come from the factory 16's vs 17's, the two trucks side-by-side tend to look the same height/clearances. Now my question for this part is going to be based upon these two trucks being completely stock with regard to the factory suspensions...no lifts/upgrades. I ask this question because all the search results tend to answer the TRD group of owners and they tend to be 4x4 owners as well. Neither is my case. So, since wheels are on the agenda, I'm looking to the pros to guide me!

I'm considering 16x8's or 17x8's and would like to go with a LT tire vs. a street tire. I have NO PLANS to lift it or modify things because I like it the way it stands and don't off road it. I've read some of the tire height threads but again, my specific needs weren't really addressed. Can anyone tell me for sure what the biggest height/width LT tire I can put on here for both the 16 & 17 wheel, without having clearance issues?

My next question is regarding the front grille surround. I've got a chrome one and would like to replace it with a painted one (silver). Can anyone tell me where to get a painted grille surround, other than the dealership, or if that's my only option, what it's proper description would be? Do they come factory painted or is this something I'll have to do myself?

Lastly, I'm in need of a camper shell for the truck. Really new to these so I need some insight and what to watch for. Nothing fancy, but would like the height to remain close to the height of the cab. Need side windows that will open to vent, and plan to get the window seal to allow a/c to get back there via the pass through cab window. Brands to recommend or avoid would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry about the great length of my first post here, but these issues are important to me. My priority is to my dogs, so I'd like to get moving on the camper shell. I just traded in my 2003 Corvette Z06 to get this truck for them...yes, for them , so I'm anxious to take them for a ride!!

    Thanks all, in advance

Wow...I've been hunting for a few days and you guys had answers in 15 minutes.... I still discovered/learned a lot during my searching, though. And thanks for the welcome. Anyone have an ebay link or what to search under for the grille surround? Thanks again

Just search "tacoma grill 2007". You'll have to do a lot of weeding out to see if there is one there for your color.

as for tires , have found the Goodyear Duratracs to be the best all use tire.
I painted my rims and they turned out great, check out my photos.
i used to have a cap on my last truck, and put the seal in-between
the heat or the air conditioning will really not get in the bed enough
to be anywhere near effective, get good windows that open wide
    with good screens on them

Well, I just ordered my wheels and tires so that's done. Now to get the cap taken care of.I need to find a way to keep the temp cooler in the cap/bed area during the summer months and figured the AC would be sufficient, albeit slow. I planned on getting sliding windows to help with the ventilation, but don't want the dogs to be stuck in stifling heat. We have a dog beach about 30 miles from me and we used to take them in the wife's SUV (rear was partitioned to keep them in the back), so comfort was a non-issue. We don't have the SUV anymore so we'd like to be able to use the bed area to carry wet dogs home in, rather than the cab. Any other suggestions would be great from those who have or had caps.

BTW, the wheels are the XD Addicts (17's) in black/machined with Nitto TG's. I think I'll like them... better than the grandpa wheels I have now, anyway!
