I bought the oem 2nd gen running boards that have a plastic cover over the boards. They stick out enough and will never rust. Lots of people were taking them off their 2nd gen to install on 3rd gen because they still looked like new.
I bought new at dealer for around $300. May want to check out... PT212-35055 (DCSB)

Sliders and steps do not block door dingers, least rear doors. Front doors are shaped like a square or have flat edges. Rear doors most of the time, the door comes out to a point, that point will bypass that side step or slider and slam into your door. Just park far away. I do it and my passengers hate it.

You cannot get them to believe it. They think because they have big, bad sliders on their truck it is bullet proof. LOL! Lets see those sliders stop a wind pushed shopping cart when it crashes into the side of their truck.

Sliders or steps provide some protection in certain situations. My sliders do help me keep my OCD in check though.

Good thread and tips. I park from afar and walk. Avoid parking in low areas and never park next to a beater or dented up car or truck. Some kids who ride in the rear seats of other cars are also likely culprits, they swing open their doors with reckless abandon.

I once watched a welfare mom allow her kid to shove their empty shopping cart away and watch it coast across the parking lot where it crashed into other carts and tipped on its side. The kid then laughed. There were some fairly new cars parked just 5 yards away. If those cars were hit I was ready with my phone camera to get her license plate. This was at Target and it was caught on security cameras. The mom did not give a $hit at all and never scolded or corrected her kid!
