I understand the yellow/amber lights are best for poor weather conditions.

I have an unrelated question about off road lights during normal nighttime conditions. I living in the desert and was curious wether which color lighting I should be looking into White or Amber? Does it depend on The terrain? What are your thoughts?

 

White is going to be higher output. Any flittering of the light source reduces output, as is the case for selective yellow. True amber like the KC and Morimotos lack the high intensity compared to the white options. In short, white will provide the best visibility in clear conditions. However if looking at a true fog pattern light, the Rigid white is too high in color temp IMO, and appears a bit blue which isn’t ideal. The KC G4 in white has a much better color temp and wider beam pattern which will provide better proximity lighting for situational awareness off road. We’ll see what the
upcoming offerings from Baja Designs looks like, Baja uses better white light color temps than Rigid.

Is the light for off road use only? If so you might consider the Baja Designs wide cornering instead, the area coverage will be better, but it will lack cut offs for street use.

For off road use, you might also consider the stock halogen TRD H11 fogs, they have the widest side projection of any of the lights providing lighting almost 90 degrees to the side of the truck. All the LED replacement fogs are actually lower in output, but focus the light far more forward to keep the intensity up with the lower output light source. The TRD fogs cover a much larger area, so the light is more distributed but not as intense even though the light source is brighter. Then there is my halogen mods to double the output of the TRD units.

White it is then, which is what I figured but wanted to ask before I start shopping for light pods, not for the Fog location but mounted on the bumper.
I was figuring 2-3 large pods for off road use only.

 

Cruising through some of your posts it looks like you have tested the newest Hikari Ultra H11's ..from pics it looks like Toyota LED fogs are a better color temp match to the Hikari Ultras vs the Morimoto LED fogs. Would you agree or be able to confirm? I like the Morimotos and they have held up well but the color temp difference has always bugged me a little. I would be willing to swap for Toyotas LED fogs just for the sake of a closer color temp matching.

I measured the Hikaris at 6664k color temp. You can see the comparison between the Toyota and Morimotos below. It certainly moves it in the right direction but still leaves a 400k+ gap.



The PIAA LED fogs would be the be the match, but their performance is awful. Next closest would be the ORTown fog pods. (Color temp chart in the OP).

 

Looks like you need to answer a very important question. What's more important, matching the color temperature or performance?

Ya since majority of my night driving is in well lit city areas for these it's matching color temp. I have a LED bar stuffed in my lower grill for lighting up wooded areas and off paved areas. For the price the OEMs are not a huge expense. If I'm reading Crashburn80's charts properly they outperform the Morimotos as well so looks like a win win. For practical use of a fog light I would probably go the amber route: )

 

Yupper. I went from OEM, to Morimotos, to (clear) KC's. In retrospect, the Morimotos were pretty lame. The KC's blow everything away.

I'm actually happy with my amber Morimoto fogs. They don't seem like much driving in a city with mostly HPSV lighting, but on highways and suburban roads, they light up a lot.

 

Looks like maybe an 893 fog? Easier to look up with year/make/model of the vehicle.

Has anyone seen the 6" Rigid selective yellows? Ive been reading this thread many times, almost to many but with this good info its not a bad thing. I am thinking of running the dually sae in my bumper then two of the 6" selective when i need them in fog. Last two mornings we had a good bit of fog, stock fog lights are useless sadly, and hids are almost too bright. My other though was to get the white sae dually and use the amber cover as needed and get a set of A pillar mounts to put my dually driving beam on for extra light. Would love to see a dually with one row of white and one row of selective yellow, hell even the 30" driving bar split 50/50 white/amber so you can chose when needed.

 

The 6" Rigid lights have 6 LEDs vs the D-series pod 4 LEDs. They are basically 50% higher in output in all categories since they have 50% more LEDs.

 

I think ill order either the white or selective yellow for the fogs and get some a pillar mounts for the d2 driving lights i currently have on my other truck. Im between the white and selective yellow. I dont get much fog or dust in my area but we usually get rain its a lot, and not much snow. I know when i take the clear covers off my driving d2s and put the amber covers on it killed the light output a lot.

 

So, before you launch into my ghetto pod question I wanted to clarify I kind of just want a project and a simple place holder for good quality fog pods.

That being said, I’m looking at these janky pods on Amazon I kind of want to check out. The description says flood beam and my concern is less of brightness (I live in the city) and more of I don’t want to blind people.

What do you think? Worth the few bucks for a cheap project?
