Totally jelly of it too. If I was out there he'd be my new best friend and then I'd make him take me so I could get practice.
Almost bought an old 1970s metal lathe, I forget brand but was industrial and commercial quality made in USA blah blah, like 10 years ago from a local manufacturing shop. It had very slight play, very very slight play but I had nowhere to set it up or store it at the time. This shop was just selling it to highest buyer.... It went for like 600 bucks:anonymous::bananadead:

Once you get familar with all the controls that make's it easier. Then just learn how the machines behave (every machine is different) & how certain metals cut then go from there. When your lathe or mill doesnxt like how you cut something, it will tell you! Lol

We tried cutting something on the mill the other day but it didn’t make a strait cut. One side was canted so it didn’t mount strait. Gotta figure out why

Still have my CD. Likely won’t ever get rid of it even though I ripped it to mp3 like 10 years ago.

Kids these days and their “music”. Get a haircut and get off my lawn!

I'd have to see the setup (how you held the part), the cutter, & what the cut looked like to be able to offer any tips. But for milling, look up convention vs climb milling & get familiar with that. Generally you don't want to climb mill on a manual mill, especially if it's old & has wear. There are exceptions where you can climb mill but generally it best to conventional mill.

We tried to cut a notch in some square stock we had. Just made a few passes to make the notch one side of the notch is 90° the other side is more like 110° So it didn’t mount right on the plate

Again not sure what was going on but was the vise trammed in? Anytime you take the vise off the table & put it back on it needs to be trammed (set in line with travel of the X axis on the table.

Doing it the old fashioned way with a Terry cloth pad and some wax. Wish I had a buffer but I don't really know how to wield one properly.
