Or that we ever landed on the moon, or that vaccines are dangerous, or that (fill in the blank wack job crazy conspiracy theory) is true. They can be fun to bait but I can only suffer so many fools so I tire of it quickly.

Not only amazing as a technological achievement. It also reduces the cost of sending objects into space from earth by something like 30%. That's a big number. You can do 4 launches for the price of 3 previously. Plus the competition in the launch market now has driven costs down even further, so the ratio is probably even better than that.

It's all fun and games until some anti-vaxxer gets on an airplane with you.

    He isn't?!?! :alien:

I've had my shots too. And because this is the science thread we can talk rationally about the subject. No vaccine is 100% effective, so you're right, it is best to avoid sick people whenever possible.

    Their problem, not mine. :D

I'm not the one susceptible to catching something, and all of us are fully up to date. Sucks to be the folks who are immunocompromised though, and rely on herd immunity to not catch things.

Now, is herd immunity worth forcing people to do things? That's politics.

I'd say herd immunity is a public health issue, measles don't care if you're in the red or blue camp. Just like you can't smoke in public anymore you shouldn't be able the shed viruses in public either. (100% no way to enforce it though)

Huh? While I'm not a fan of smoking, you totally can smoke in public. Or you mean some private venues?

I really hate the 'public health' framing these days, anyway. It can inform policy, but part of freedom is the ability to make your own choices regardless of the statistical impact. Like, driving a truck instead of a tesla. Etc.

Which is why it's hard for me to care. I care more about the local chili and ribs cook-offs cause at least it's local and I can participate.

Not sure where you're from, but in my neck of the woods smoking has been prohibited in public spaces, restaurants, malls, public buildings, concerts, etc. There might be places where people smoke but as a former smoker looking for my next cig is a thing of the past.

I think of it this way, you should be free to swing your arms around as you please, but that freedom ends at my nose. Pro-diseasers should be free to get sick as they please, but that freedom ends when they expose others to that sickness.

My mom is deaf in one ear from childhood measles, back in her day when a house had the measles they would put a quarantine sign in the window and the doctor had to make house calls. Maybe we have to go back to that for the pro-diseasers.

To a point. If you're say, in a park, and they were there first, moving to the place besides them (assuming they're not lighting up by you or whatever) means you're at fault, no them.

See the usual stuff about nuisance law. (https://www.justia.com/real-estate/docs/nuisance/)

A bit of a callback, but Living in Florida some years ago I remember heading out of Tampa on I-4 just as a shuttle launch went up. It seemed to be coming up directly in front of me, since it was a really clear day, and it could be clearly seen from East Tampa, just past 50th. St. Also, heard the double Sonic Booms during one of the landings while living in Gulfport, south St. Petersburg.
Sadly, I also watched Challenger's last flight. The smoke trails lasted for a very long time in the sky that morning...
