U.S. Government Blocking Return Of Surplus M-1 Garand Rifles From Korea
    by Brian McCombie
Last year, South Korean military officials announced plans to sell off 86,000 surplus M1 Garand rifles and another 22,000 M1carbines. But will bureaucratic red tape from the U.S. side hamper these sales?

South Korea --(AmmoLand.com)- Will the US Block Korea from shipping surplus Garands?
Those rifles had sat in South Korean warehouses for the last five decades, and could prove a treasure trove for military surplus retailers, collectors, and shooters. (see South Korea to sell 108,000 Garand Rifles to US Gun Collectors)
Recently, though, came news from South Korea that the sale of these M1 Garand’s, and another 22,000 M1 Carbines, was in a sort of bureaucratic limbo.
According to the Korea Times, “The U.S. government opposed South Korea’s bid to sell hundreds of thousands of aging U.S. combat rifles to American gun collectors…The [Ministry of National Defense] announced the plan last September as part of efforts to boost its defense budget, saying the export of the M1 Garand and carbine rifles would start by the end of 2009.”
However, “The U.S. administration put the brakes on the plan, citing ‘problems’ that could be caused by the importation of the rifles. The problems the U.S. government cited were somewhat ambiguous, said an official at the Ministry of National Defense on condition of anonymity.”
“The U.S. insisted that imports of the aging rifles could cause problems such as firearm accidents,” the official told Korea Times.
“It was also worried the weapons could be smuggled to terrorists, gangs or other people with bad intentions. We’re still looking into the reason why the U.S. administration is objecting to the sale of the rifles and seeking ways to resolve the problems raised.”
Time for some grass roots action: Contact your congressmen and senators an tell them to expedite this repatriation of American Made Rifles.

Not suprising but a damn shame.

Fucking lame argument, given the way terrorists, gangs or other people with bad intentions can easily get hold of mac 10s, tek 9s, and other compact automatic weapons.

We have got to stop letting idiots run our country.

I for one would like to give home/shelter to these poor unfortunate Garand and Carbine rifles. Poor things must be cold and needed warmth.
Need to make some calls and e-mails.;)

Somebody doesn't understand what's going on here and it might be me.

Do you want to buy a Garand or M1 from South Korea?

That's what is happening, according to the article.

I'll buy from a domestic source, like CMP.

Sounds to me like it's just another example of this anti gun regime we have running this country. Pretty lame excuses, you think they would trust these more in the arms of american citizens than in some foreign country. I agree sundevil 100%, when is the last time you seen a gangsta or terrorist with an m-1. LAME.

Was that the name of the operation of selling them to S. Korea.
I have heard they are fine examples and would gladly purchase one.
I have a CMP Garand and it is nice.

They provided one hell of an advantage to our boy's back in WWII over the bolt actions the evil axis had.

Great piece of history and fun as all get out to shoot.

I would rather they hold up the sale instead of using tax money to buy and then melt down in a feel good move.

NOOOOOOO!!!!!1111 Please no!!!! Don't they understand the history these firearms have.

Liberal minds are truely astounding. Its all about feel good here, feel good there. Logic for them is something alien I guess.

Couldn't agree more with all this. What a fucking joke being worried about them getting to people with bad intentions...aren't there many more people with bad intentions where the fucking guns are now vs. being in Americans' hands on American soil. Kinda scary what it's gonna take for the government to realize they are only bullshitting themselves thinking we believe the lame shit spilling from their shit stained lips. Idiocy and political correctness can suck shit from the ass of the government, I will not!

I enjoy guns. I'm not a hunter or even what I would call an enthusiast, but I have an appreciation of and healthy respect for guns. I do own a few, but's it's not something I brag about. I am a huge supporter of the Second Ammendment and gun owners' rights, and this maneuver by the administration is just bullshit. It goes to show that once again their heads are up their asses and they don't know shit.

The best way to to keep these weapons out of the hands of bad people are to bring them in and let the gun collecting society buy them up. These are prolly still rifled for .30 cal to which (I admit I don't know for sure) that ammo is not readily available, so there's one concern gone. Plus most people who buy one is prolly never going to fire it because they buy it for the collectible status and want to keep it pristine.

I have to admit if I had the money I'd buy two. One that I would keep exactly how I bought it and the other to shoot the shit out of anything I can!

I have a fondness for these, and 1911s, and Glocks, and nevermind. :D

To say terrorists will use them is stupid, I want an 8 Lb. rifle that costs 3 times more to buy, ammo costs double, and takes 3 times as much maint., holds 8 rounds instead of 30+, is twice as long to conceal under your dress, as the AK-47 Yes thats it.
