My guess is, one guy was emboldened because he was carrying a pistol, or maybe both were . I don't carry anymore because of what I might be tempted to get involved in, because I have a gun.

    WTF?

The hours we spend scrolling through our smartphones appear to be changing our skulls. This may be the reason why some people — especially the younger crowd — are developing a weird, bony spike just above their necks.

The bony skull bump — known as an external occipital protuberance — is sometimes so large, you can feel it by pressing your fingers on the base of your skull.

"I have been a clinician for 20 years, and only in the last decade, increasingly, I have been discovering that my patients have this growth on the skull," David Shahar, a health scientist at the University of The Sunshine Coast, Australia, told the BBC in a fascinating feature about the changing human skeleton

A cause-and-effect relationship hasn't been identified, but it's possible that the spike comes from constantly bending one's neck at uncomfortable angles to look at smart devices. The human head is heavy, weighing about 10 lbs. (4.5 kilograms), and tilting it forward to look at funny cat photos (or however you spend your smartphone time) can strain the neck — hence the crick people sometimes get, known as "text neck."

Text neck can increase pressure on the juncture where the neck muscles attach to the skull, and the body likely responds by laying down new bone, which leads to that spiky bump, Shahar told the BBC. This spike distributes the weight of the head over a larger area, he said.
In a 2016 study in the Journal of Anatomy, Shahar and a colleague looked at the radiographs of 218 young patients, ages 18 to 30, to determine how many had these bumps. Regular spikes had to measure at least 0.2 inches (5 millimeters), and enlarged spikes measured 0.4 inches (10 mm).

In all, 41% of the group had an enlarged spike and 10% had an especially large spike measuring at least 0.7 inches (20 mm), the doctors found. In general, enlarged spikes were more common in males than in females. The largest spike belonged to a man, sticking out at 1.4 inches (35.7 mm).

I might get flamed for this but if some woman had me by the balls and they were bleeding, I'd have to punch her in the mouth...

It's weird walking around when you aren't one of the zombies walking through life with their head glued to a phone. Even at work people hardly look up to smile at coworkers. From the second they leave their car to enter work till the time they leave. All with their head glued to the screen. The only thing I use my phone for these days is music while driving and maps. It's why my service only costs $0.

I went to NYC for a 9/11 ceremony (God bless all those who lost their lives that day) for my first time a couple years ago. You can instantly tell the locals from tourists. All the locals have their ear buds in & stare straight @ their phones while the tourists are enjoying the sights & sounds. It was really obvious. Oddly, the locals have zero situational awareness while I'm looking @ every person thinking every one of them is going to rob or stab me.
Coming from rural Texas, I enjoyed it but had enough after 2 days.

Exactly how I feel everyday. Like a tourist enjoying the sights while everyone else is addicted to their phone. It's going to be scary when they successfully complete a neuralink with the phones.

I've noticed on holidays now that even on holidays I find myself pulling myself from the phone to see the sights, however I get way more pics.

...^^^... Good move on watching the locals vs visitors ...

I live 1/2 of the time in the US and 1/2 of the time in Thailand and I preach "situations awareness" to my Thai wife and daughter all the time and hope that some of it sticks.

In the US, on a basic level, I am amazed at how many people at Costco have no idea what's going on around them when pushing their carts around.

When traveling, and on the road and in international airports, I watch people like a hawk.

I do have a little PTSD from the military ... but really learned "situational awareness" as a newspaper delivery boy from age 12 to 17 ... had to fend off the dogs delivering morning and evening newspapers and chase people down to collect their newspaper bills ... that was my first start on "SA".

Good "SA" has saved my ass several times. :)

And don't forget the scourge of "smart" watches. I HATE those things. You can't have an uninterrupted conversation with a person wearing one of those things. Seriously you don't have to respond instantly every time someone contacts you. My rule is I answer email once a day, calls go to voice mail and texts I read as I can during the day.

I notice the same thing and it amazes me too. Even worse, driving on the same road as people who are "zoned out" while controlling a 1-2 ton high speed projectile capable of killing a person or family in a split second. Drives me nuts how truly unaware people are.

We have casual friends who come down about once a year and they spend half the time on their fkng phones, and were not youngsters. It drives me batshit. The last time they were buried in their latest phone for about an hour, I went out to my garage and started to work on a project. After a while my wife freaks out and comes out to tell me I'm being rude. I said loud enough "I'm being rude"?? The visit was a little awkward after that, but they put their effen phones down. Haven't seen them for a while, no shits given here.

I have a co-worker that used to work MedEvac and showed me this clip.

He said those dumbasses should have been fired for not using a tag line. Not only could they have severely injured the patient, if not killed her. They could have taken down the helicopter too.
