Alcan leaf springs

My alcans have squeaked since Day 1. Had them for 10 years.

Told them to make the packs handle +200 lbs of capacity.
Leafs are set up for more like +500lbs. Rides stiff as hell since day 1.


One of these days I'll get around to getting rid of these or removing a leaf. Going to need to replace the pads too.

 

Yeah thanks for the heads up. I installed a 1/8 thick washer and that seemed to to the trick. Rides smooth and cycles good.

 

Remove a leaf. I had a 9 leaf progressive pack built for my 99 back in I think around 2006. They were on the stiff side but could definitely handle load and I used the truck for everything. This was when it was Charles there at Alcan. He told me that I could try removing a leaf, and if that didn't do it, I could send them back for de-arching. I think it was the 3rd or 4th leaf that he said to take out. That truck is still at my inlaws house on the other side of the country so I can't check for you, sorry. But, long story short, it worked pretty well.

Plus, it's a good time to clean them up and prime/paint.

 

3rd or 4th from the top? Does he still work there?

 

Sorry Thunder, just seeing this now. Me and my fam are back visiting family so I was able to go out back and look. It's the third leaf from the bottom that I removed based on Charles recommendation. I don't think he's there anymore. I'm pretty sure he was the old owner, and he sold it some time ago. Maybe someone else can clarify/confirm that. Kinda stinks because now I live within about 200 miles of Alcan, but I haven't heard great things as of late. Actually drove right by the Alcan yard when I was down that way for a mountain bike race a couple months ago.

I definitely miss that leaf pack and I'm between yanking these Alcans off this truck, or just getting some Deaver J59's for my 04. I just did a rebuild/clean up/paint on the stockers that had a single AAL and installed a 3 leaf AAL. Just wish I had about a 1/2" more height.

Yeah I had the same issues. I had to lub the polley bushings with special polley grease. Pluss I ordered my for stock hight Pluss 200 lbs. After installing my shell of 180lbs the springs saged 3/8 of an inch. For what they cost they should deliver what they claim. I should have ordered them with Oem bushings. They do ride good tho.
