Brake "click" feel?

    Hi all,

I have a new 2019 TRDOR and I noticed that when I start to depress the brake pedal, there is a "click" feeling before it actually starts to brake. It does NOT make a clicking SOUND, which I read about on the forum is a common issue on previous models, but it's kind of annoying that every time I brake it feels like there's some "give" or "looseness". This is especially bad in stop-and-go traffic, since I'm braking so often. Had taken it into the dealership but they said everything looks fine.

Is this normal? Unfortunately it's hard to describe as its not something that can be captured on video. Thanks all!

I haven’t experienced this in either of my 3rd gens. Take it to the dealer. If they can feel it they should fix it.

The “click” is your brake light actuator. It will fade away as you use the brake pedal more

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Maybe try reversing and hitting the brakes that may readjust the rear brakes

Correct. Off-roads have an electric hydraulic power pack for the brakes. They take some getting used to if you are coming from something with a vacuum booster.

Ease into the pedal enough to make the pump spin up. Then they will feel quite linear.

I was driving a current-gen F150 and a 2012 Honda Civic previously, and both had much smoother braking than my Taco.

I have noticed that when I ease into the pedal VERY lightly it sometimes does not occur, but I really have to focus on it and can't do this in the city where everyone is stopping suddenly/being a dick in general. Even when I have plenty of time to brake and try to ease into it I still feel the click/jolt about 50% of the time.

My 2020 Off Road is doing this as well. I tested it at a dead stop. It clicks every other time it’s depressed. It’s super annoying and the dealer tells me this is normal.

Its the characteristic of our trucks. I have a click as well, but it only happens once forward or in reverse. Its the caliper/pad design from what I was told. There is some play in the brake pad (by design), and what you are hearing is the pad shifting forward or back depending on the direction you're driving. I had a private owned shop and the dealership look at it when I thought it was an issue and they both told me the same thing. The noise is annoying, but I notice zero difference in braking performance.

My wife’s 2016 Corolla does the exact same thing, she says she doesn’t notice it, it however makes me nuts when I have to drive it anywhere. My truck on the other hand does not have the *click* so while it’s obviously not dangerous, it isn’t normal by any means IMO.

If you are referring to what I am, I completely understand. It feels almost like it’s cable operated and is seized, and then suddenly releases for about 1/16-1/8” and then again is firm. I know it obviously isn’t cable operated but that’s the best analogy I can think of off hand.

Our trucks do also making a “click” or “clunk” as the pads move around and contact the caliper, but again I don’t believe you are referring to that.

For me there’s no sound associated with this. It’s just a feeling in the pedal.

Yes my 2021 Pro does this same thing. I think it feels like a quick pulse and release, somewhat like an abs system feels when engaged. I wouldn't say it is normal, just something that owners deal with.

Normal for Toyota .... the brakes are pretty dated . Toyota needs to get with the program hopefully 4th gen will finally address the brakes .

I still don’t think he is referring to the normal pad movement that the majority of commenters are.

I have the same issue you speak of with my 2020 off road. I feel it in the gas pedal also. I haven’t brought it to the dealership yet. Seemed to be doing it from day one.

Sounds like there are two things going on.

    1. On ORs, there is a different mechanical approach to power braking, and it feels different than the other 99% of cars made since 1960nor whenever power brakes became a thing.

    2. On all Tacoma's there is a once-a-day slip that happens the first time you brake, usually in reverse and maybe once again the first time you brake going forward. It's annoying and everyone says it's normal. No one has died from it and there haven't been any recalls. It's just annoying and concerning every day, once a day,not think your shiny new truck isn't working right.

My SR5 definitely has (2), that one time clunk. I thought it was the AT, but maybe that's a different clunk. I imagine OR drivers will get used to their braking system and then be upset if it ever changes to something different.

I tell you, the RAV4 steering is electric, not pneumatic, and it drives me crazy. But I guess no PS fluid changes are a nice benefit. So I'm sure there's some benefits to the OR braking approach.
