baofeng uv 5r and Yaesu ftm-400. Studying for my general, then plan on going yaesu ft-857d

 

Dual bands here. Alinco DJ-MD5GP and Kenwood D710g

 

My first rig was a Baofeng. Put a mag mount 1/4 wave Nagoya on that radio and you'll see quite an improvement. I now run a Kenwood TM-V71a on that same antenna which is no longer a mag mount but instead screwed into a bracket coming off the 3rd brake light assy.

I have VHF and VHF/UHF radios, each radio has it's own dedicated roof mounted antenna.

 

The APK for OSM is different than what you can download from the Google Play store, so you need to side-load the APK. Instructions here, download here. Then you still need to download the offline map file.

 

Why would you need to choose a different map than what you were using a month ago?

Seriously sounds like you didn't download the OSM APK, even though you thought you might have. I just tried it and it works fine. The option is Map File Name in the most recent version... (screenshots below)

If you did download the OSM APK, what's the URL of the APK that you installed?

 

All depends on amount of space you have for antennas and QTH station. Ive used computer desk, wire racks (do not use). Even just a Bar stool with counter top screwed to it. Trees are best if you can put up a Dipole.

I had exactly what you described happen to me. The map file preference option disappeared. I remembered that the play store version didn't allow the use of offline mapes and sure enough, the version of APRSdroid installed was the latest version of the app being offered from the play store.

The fix of course was to remove it and install the OSM version.

 

What antennas are you running? I’m getting a good deal on a Kenwood vhf. Was looking at a 19” tram antenna.

 

I'd guess auto update was on.

Only way to do it is in Google play your settings in there just turn off auto update.

 

I've never seen a setting in the app for this. I have the tablet's OS set to not auto-update but it still happened.

 

Pretty sure there isn't a way to do that.

I never have auto update on. In my profession you usually want to be two versions behind. Or find a version and stick with it until some major break through and even then wait for a stable version to come out.

Google always pokes you to update stuff so even turning off auto update you can quickly update apps you want to

 

Really though why didn't you have a bcn map of the area? That's what you should have had in the first place

 

Haha. Am I the only one to overkill this. I have APRSdroid on 3 devices I carry. The current phone which is backup to the back up. My old phone (primary for APRSdroid) and my tablet. Old phone has no sim card and only gets wifi when I switch it on. Same for tablet. Both the tablet (primary for BCN) and the old phone have BCN on them.

 

Eh not really. My current phone has bcn on it and aprs. Tablet runs bcn mainly bit has aprs too. And then old phone with just aprs.

 

That TM-V71a is the radio I want to go with but don't have $370 to drop on it plus antenna and NMO mount. I was going to settle for a much cheaper radio for the time being but may just buy a mount and antenna and see what my Baofeng can do.

I hook my Baofeng to a Comet GP-1 in my attic when I am at home and get great range. 16 miles to the furthest repeater I can hit and it/I come across clear in radio checks. Throw it inside the cabin of my truck though and I cant even bring in the closest repeater to me once I get outside 4 miles.

 

You didn't put bcn on the SD card?

 

The truck is a giant Faraday cage. Before I had picked up the mag mount, I'd clip the radio the the window glass 3/4 of the way up with the antenna sticking out of the truck. That alone made a difference.

 

Yup, I can’t hit a repeater for anything with the ht in the cab so no DMR Mobile.
