I think some here are confusing two separate functions. There is the shut off at stop and restart with press of the gas pedal. We see this on some newer vehicles in an effort to increase MPG's by not wasting gas idling waiting for the light to turn green. Then there is the function the OP is siting which simply turns the vehicle off if it idles for a predetermined amount of time since vehicles are so quiet many people forget they are running and exit the vehicle. This is problematic if it's in a closed location such as your garage. Yes, it's a nanny function but I'm sure it can be turned off.

Thats the part I have a problem with. What percentage of the time are you actually stopped vs total time in the vehicle..? And during those times you would normally be idling.. so I dont see how it can can make that big of a difference.

Edit: excluding heavy traffic in big cities. But lets be honest, if you live there then take public transportation.

I live in the suburbs and I can't go a 1/4 mile without hitting a stop light. It is hell on MPGs. So, yes, it heavily depends on where you live and drive, but I imagine a high percentage of us live in the 'burbs.

Actually, the article was pretty clear - there are two separate functional scenarios...

    1) For cars equipped with the carmaker's Smart Key System keyless entry - after a pre-determined period of time in the event the vehicle is left running and the owner overlooked the fact they didn't turn off the engine (when the car detects the driver leaving (keyless entry already sound a chime and provide a visual warning about a running engine; the new system enhances those two cautions). Toyota says a future upgrade for automatic shutoff will send a reminder to a smartphone app.
Answer #1) The only issue that wasn't expressly clarified was if this was only when the driver left the vehicle and how long the period was as well as if this was configurable.

    2) Automatic park is designed to curtail rollaways and will only be available on models with electronic shifters or parking brakes.
In this case, Toyota is clear that the system operates if the driver exits the vehicle and hasn't put the vehicle in Park.
In that case, the car will either shift into to Park itself, or activate the electronic parking brake.
Answer #2) We have neither, so not Tacoma.

The good news is that in the not too distant future auto stop/start won't exist anymore.
The bad news is neither wili IC engines.

Drove a 2020 Corolla loaner recently and it had this feature. Come to a complete stop and ebrake holds car automatically. I could take my foot off the brake and car would not move until you touch the accelerator. Weird in traffic.

I believe there a disable option in settings. Was happy to get my wife’s 2019 Land Cruiser back from service after driving that loaner

True, but continue with the rest of the article. Context is key

I think I read somewhere over the weekend that Tacoma would be getting it.

I don’t see this being a major issue. In 30+ years driving, I must have left the vehicle running and not in park no more than twice.

That feature is called "Hill Assist".

I don't see how unless they switch the truck to an electronic parking brake which I don't see happening.

I have push button start on both a 2009 Nissan Murano (which my wife has left running more than once) and our 2016 Tacoma. Yesterday at Walmart I got 10 feet away from the truck before I realized it was still running. If we parked cars in the garage we probably be dead by now.

Every car I've driven that has that feature has the ability to disable it.
