Some people work these things called "real" jobs and have no life. I wish I could pull a living rooting through junkyards.

    What I do isn’t exactly a vacation either. But I have a lot of time I otherwise wouldn’t have working a 9-5.

I wrench on 60 year old machinery at work along with a lot of fabricating and wiring. Last thing I want to do on the weekend is do the same stuff on my truck. If its gonna be super expensive to have a shop do it (install my lift for example) I'll plan to do it using some vacation time. But for piddly stuff like tire rotations, oil changes, brake adjustments etc; Im at the point now where I just drink coffee in the lounge whilst some dealer tech works on my truck.

A true millennial wouldn't be working my job lol. It involves standing up for 8 hours a day.

At least be judicious about where you take your vehicle for the so called "piddly" stuff. Dealer techs are second and third rate at best but the dealer charges you first rate prices. Don't really get anything of value if the job isn't done right, which is 90% of why I do my own work. The other 10% is my enjoyment at getting better/faster at all of it. I honestly couldn't be bothered to put up with the idiots at the dealership for stuff so minor as brake adjustments and oil changes. That's all 5 min stuff

@Empty_Lord excluded of course, but I've heard the horror stories about his co-workers haha

I don't understand taking a 15+ year old vehicle to a dealership, plenty of experienced mechanics in other shops that will probably know an older vehicle better than the dealer techs would, and usually a lot cheaper.

Dealers are for warranty work on new vehicles imo. Learned my lesson with that one too many times over

no offense to @Empty_Lord either lol, always exemptions to the rule

I see your points. And if my family hadn't heen taking their vehicles to the same dealer for 25+ years, I would agree. Never had any issues with the quality of work, and if there was an issue, they made it right. I try to talk to the techs themselves when I can and bypass some of the advisors that are down right stupid, that or request the same advisor each time.

I may take it to an import specialty shop thats close to me for the upcoming inspection, just to see if they can do it faster than the dealer can.

there's always exceptions to the rule, I'm sure there are some good family owned dealerships out there that rely on their good reputation more than some of the big corporate ones do in big cities like where I live. Just in general my experience with dealers hasn't been the greatest, although when I first got my truck I got to know a service advisor at the local Toyota dealer pretty well and he was always cool and willing to work with me. But in hindsight, I still probably paid way too much money on stuff I could've gotten done elsewhere for less. Or done myself instead, but the first couple years I had my truck I didn't have a place to work on it.

Its funny, most of my coworkers have the same mind set as me when it comes to vehicle maintenance. Why on earth would I do it myself it in my free time when that's all I do during the week? If I had some boring desk job, I could see wrenching being a good release on the weekends.

Yeah I get that, for me working on my truck is a way to get outside and do something with my hands. I get to enjoy doing creative stuff at my day job from time to time but it's still indoor and not very 'hands on'. Tinkering with my truck is a fun hobby outside of all that for me

I like to use more truck, I hate playing mechanic and will only do it if I want to.

Oil isn’t a big deal as it only take 15 minutes.

Probably why my trucks a pile

I try not to every have to do things inside but stupid AZ ruins that for me quite often. Ideally, I like to sleep inside (unless camping), have some food inside, and occasionally watch a movie and do some TW nonsense inside. Rest of my time would ideally be working an outdoor job and working in the garage. I got enough of being inside as a kid and being stuck inside for school.
