I usually recommend against early trades but with this type of all cash deal I don’t see any issue. You have the money and desire the new features. I agree with the guy above, watch the ‘finance’ office prick. $500 to push print, etc lards up the invoice with pure profit for the dealership and adds no value to your end of the transaction.

Personally they will have to pry my 2016 out of my cold dead hands because I don’t want a vehicle that slams on the brakes automatically. I love warning systems (no human can pay attention 100% of the time) but abhor automatic intervention. See the 737 Max for examples of why I prefer to be in command of any vehicle I operate instead of the engineer who designed it. Maybe I’m a curmudgeon but I estimate we’re at least 80% of the way to HAL 9000 killing us.

I would do it to for $3900.
But you guys seem to be forgetting something. These are Toyota's for God's sake.

Don't the 2020's come out in September ? What about price increases on those ? I am assuming they will be higher but I might be wrong. Thanks for the tips.

The problem here dude is that you only have 12k miles on it. Not even 36k or 60k which is when warranties run out.

$4000 for 12k miles is a bit stiff when there are no other advantages.

Are you gonna trade in again after 3 more years?

Maybe in 2 years, who knows. I doubt that a dealer is going much lower than $3900 .

I have always wondered just how much a Toyota goes down in value after owning one for two years and now I know. Not much.

I don't think these models are going to change that much in 2020 that would be a big benefit to me. I do know they will probably go up in price but only time will tell.

That sounds like a deal that is to good to be true. $3900 doesn't include the tax on $3900 and the new truck is BRAND new with no miles? If you can trade for $2k a year..take it.

So confused now with this post. In your original post you stated "I bought the truck in May of 17. $150 a month is pretty cheap to own a truck even though as you see I don't drive it much.".

So did you pay cash for the truck or were you paying 150.00/month for the truck?

Take that deal and run for the hills. It's a great deal. Two years old and buying new for only $3900? Slam Dunk if you want the new truck

If you really gotta go for it, why not do it right and get 2020?

You get new cool looking headlights and the android auto/apple carplay headunit is so far ahead of the current one that is not even funny. Maybe get a different color that catches your eye.

Again if you are trading in every couple of years is just money down the drain,

You only drive 12k miles every 2-3 years yet you are worried about long term reliability, and warranty on a Toyota on top of that?

Just get an extended warranty for half the price or better yet, buy from a dealer with Gold Lifetime warranty(We have 2 in GA and every state has a couple) As long as you do the factory recommended maintenance, you only pay $100 for any power train repair for lifetime.

Another option to consider: $3,900 would buy a lot of extended warranty for your 2017. But you would still have a two year older truck. It's your money, do what you really want to do (and get the newer truck).

If I was in your situation though, I'd wait for the 2020 model.

He paid cash for his current truck. The $150/month number is $3900 divided by the number of months he has owned the truck.

Normally I advise keeping a truck 10 years or 150,000 miles. At that point you will get at least 1/2 your money back on trade and it is highly unlikely that you'll spend anything for major repairs. Since you get 1/2 your money back the guy who buys it will have as much, if not more invested in a 10 year old truck than you.

My guess is that $3900 is not a true OTD price. Expect to be hit with unexpected fees when it comes time to sign papers. But if those numbers hold up I'd not blame you if you trade.

The bare bones version in all trim levels WILL go up in price. They always have. But we don't know how much the nifty add-ons will cost. I'm guessing pretty steep for the power seat, LED lights, camera et al. Those are the items that will get a well equipped OR to the mid to upper 40's sticker.

New car sales are suffering, Tacoma still sells very well, tho. And 2020 trucks have people holding back on the 2019 purchases. Dealers are willing to get aggressive on pricing, if you want to play hard ball.

I do not regret my 2019, however I purchased Toyota extended warranty due to the electronics. I viewed $1300 for 10 years/100,000 mi as piece of mind. Maybe your dealer could throw you that bone on your new one?

Regardless, I hope you enjoy whatever you drive.

I made another offer late today. They first said no then called me at 7pm and accepted my offer of $3750 out the door cash. It will be here next week. I do appreciate all the feedback, both positive and negative.
In case those who say this is throwing money down the drain. I have did that a few times in my life on other things but I still did OK in my life handling our money, that be my wife of 50 years and me :) . She was 100 % for this. I would have never had did the purchase if she said no.
Again THANKS to all for the posts. I read each and every one of them and I did pay attention to all that was said. Cheers
