Sway-Away racerunners up front, Downey leafsprings (5 pack) and Bilstein 5125's in back, 2" body lift, K&N/AEM air intake, Energy Bushings, Nology plug wires, Custom front/rear bumpers and sliders. Downey header and custom exhuast from there back.
I spent a good part of my friday night researching here and many other sites for correct procedures for greasing the drive shaft of my 98 4x4. Most of its pretty straight forward. I got the straight Lithium Base and the Moly-Fortified stuff for the double cardon and slip yoke.

Buuut... Still a little grey when it comes to howmuch grease shold be pushed into the yoke.

2-3 pumps?? Till I JUST start to see it coming out the end?

I definitely don't want to seize it up.

    Thanks for anyhelp guys/gals.

The fresh grease it pretty gray to start with, IIRC. I have no idea what the "capacity" is, but the yoke can take a lot if it has not been done in a while. I was surprised at how much mine took it after I bought it used and did it for the first time. The nature of the thing is that it pumps out grease by normal driving action. Pump it in until you see some shiny inner shaft appearing. At some point, you will actually see the pressure of the grease pushing the inner shaft out. At least do it that much, then go find some speed bumps to drive over and check it to see if it pumps out a bit of fresh grease along the inner shaft. The goal is to avoid metal on metal contact. Of course, too much, and it spatters all over the underside...but that just protects the truck...

Some folks (Tacomaman06 comes to mind) have completely dismantled the yoke, cleaned it out, and repacked it. After high miles or prolonged serious offroad action (dust, mud, immersion) this is probabaly not a bad idea to truly extract really old, fouled grease and contaminants that may be packed in at the innermost yoke.

    Did I answer the question?

^x2...I pump it in until it starts coming out (don't know if that's right; it's just what I do)...I think a good part of the grease ends up on my undercarriage when the grease is "flung" out. I re-grease mine every 3-4 mos.

The Yoke & the u-joints are two different things.

With the U-joint, you can pump all you want, it'll just keep coming out.

The Yoke is different. Too much grease in the yoke, could actually prevent the yoke from functioning properly and you might get some vibrations. The grease doesn't have anywhere to go and the driveshaft can't collapse (grease doesn't compress).

I don't want to argue or say you're wrong here, but why does the FSM and the Haynes manual and the online DIY directions all say to pump until you see grease come out? It was my understanding that the slip yoke slips and in the process will pump grease out as it moves? I just did mine today and pumped until the yoke started to move but never did pump enough to push any out, mainly because I ran out of grease and didn't feel like going to buy more.

i disassembled mine this week and cleaned all the old grease out, packed er with new red and tacky #2 and put er back together. the most important part of doing it is marking the orientation of the shafts, they need to be put back together the same way they come apart.

    Do some searching.
Go to www.google.com and type in "Too much grease in slip yoke"
