Like everyone else said, that’s some thick wire lol I use 030 on 1/4” and below, since that’s the thickest my welder can even handle.

Yeah it was broken I had to replace the fan motor transformer but wasnt major. Also have a hobart 140 which I love for smaller projects. But when I'm worried about duty cycle I go Bigger.

I have lincoln 180 and it seems to work as advertised. I'm a hobby welder so don't need to do too much, though I have maxed it out a couple times.

    Awesome thread!

I'm a novice welder (no formal training) but with a lot of trial and error practice I think my welds look ok.

Checked out your build. Very nice!

I'd say you have no troubles using 120 volt machine to make quality welds.

Thank you. After struggling with some on the welds on this 2 year build I plan on getting a 220V welder before my next big project.

Sorry for stealing your pictures, but from a "strength" perspective, any major difference between the straight pull up top, and the stacking dimes in the bottom pic? ( i'm not criticizing, lord knows i'm in no position to do that ) I'm slowly building up to making some sliders and was thinking how tough it was going to be to "stack dimes" on some of the inside angles of the tube and such.

Love this thread, keep up with the pics!

Zero. Stacking dimes is just a "technique"

With my machine (Lincoln 140 mig 120V) via trial and error I figured out how to get the stacked dimes look.

When material thickness allows I turn the heat all the way up (D) and wire speed way down (2-3). I get a drip effect where I'm adding drips of weld to the weld line as I slowly pull in a straight line. It's a slow process but the end results look pretty good and I believe I'm getting good penetration. Welding area positioning is everything as I need gravity to pull the drips straight down into the previous puddle.

Keep in mind I have no idea what I'm doing or talking about I'm just making statements based off my real world experiences.
