That was from diving into base when leading off.
    They butt-slide when stealing.

My son pop-ups so fast it looks like he never slid.
I tried to post a video, but it wouldn’t.

There was a rain shower right before the game, so the dirt was WET. (Sunday, 5/6-ish at Charleston Southern- 1 cloud that just dumped & dumped)

I'm just not a fan of diving back into the bag. Too many injuries can happen to your hands.
Plus a tough 1st baseman knows what to do to a runner coming back in head 1st. I would never
coach a player to slide head 1st. :anonymous:

There can only be one Rickey Henderson. I was kinda pissed when I went to a Oakland A's game and they didn't
have any Rickey Henderson shirts. I was like What The F*ck :censored:

    Avoid being picked off ....

We/They get big lead-offs & steal bases regularly., so lots of pick-off attempts.

It’s not uncommon for a runner to steal 2 bases nearly every at bat. Wilson usually does, sometimes getting 2 stolen bases & home on a passed ball, from a walk, before the next batter completes his at bat. He did it this year in varsity too, once the coaches realized he could. They used him as a pinch-runner the last 6 games, while he was the regular center fielder on JV. He just finished the 8th grade.

Playing against teams that went deep into the AAA & AAAA playoffs, they didn’t even bothering throwing when he stole 3rd ....

I love baseball, but had no idea he would be soooo good. The whole team is good.
His name is Wilson Wages (Wilson is a family name), which has a nice ring to it (thought he could go by Will if he hated it, which he doesn’t. His best friend is named Wil, though. I call them “quad-u.”

As for butt-slide .... his pants have 5 shades of brown on the rump. The whole team is proud of their dirty pants & dirt stained caps.

I hope he stays good enough to go somewhere, but a LOT has to happen for that to happen. He’s 14 & a rising freshman, though is likely to play varsity in football, baseball, & basketball- along with a couple of his best friends. His momma worries about him getting hurt, I’m worried about burn-out, & he is worried about “being good enough” & not being bored.

    In 26 hours:
2 baseball games, in Summerville, SC- won both
    Drive home
    Sleep
Football practice 8-11:30, then lunch at school
Basketball games at 1:30 & 4 today (both arrive 30 minutes early)- won both.
Go buy a wood bat from Academy in Spartanburg for the 3 upcoming wood-bat tournaments. He grips about all his mistakes, inc. one missed pass (of 5 or 6), where the defender was holding his shorts & messed up his route- he tipped the ball with his fingers -“I still shoulda had it! If I can touch it, I should catch it!”
Hitting for an hour in the yard (his idea, not mine)
    Now, Fortnite & Youtube.

“At least I wasn’t bored today.”- Wilson

He’s the one pushing himself, not me, which is one of the things that makes me think he may go far. I don’t have to push him, just reign him in from exhaustion.

Edit: Damn that sounded like bragging. Sorry about that.
He’s just far more talented & athletic than I ever was. I’m always astounded. I’d been happy is he was just “ok” & had fun.

Baseball at the elite level can burn you out quick. I’m not a fan of travel ball. Weak pitching can make a kid look like a great hitter until he faces his 1st 90 mph pitcher only then will you realize what kinda hitter you got. 20 years ago College Baseball was full of guys who only played Little League. Plenty of Hall of Famers who only played Little League and school ball.

There are 2 guys I wish I could watch play ... Rickey Henderson & Ty Cobb. Both were exciting, & both misunderstood.
I love a great base-runner, rather than just HR after HR.

(Aside: Cobb is very misunderstood & not like his present reputation. Look up info on Charles Leerhesen’s biography on Cobb-> “Ty Cobb: A Terrible Beauty” - fascinating.)

I hope the stolen base makes a comeback as a key part of the game!

    Oh, I agree!

I push multi-sport & try to limit the travelball.
We have only allowed 4 tournament this year & the three coming up. Then, a break for Football, then basketball again.

WAY too many kids focus on 1 sport too early & to their detriment. Year round 1 sport is flat-out dangerous to a kid’s body, esp. baseball.

Any fall baseball will have to be a serious discussion, none planned so far. If any, they will be limited. We have played 3-4 in the fall before, but with football getting more intense, that may stop cold.

We -my wife & I- are very conscious of the burnout factor. It’s my biggest, actually. I talk about it regularly with him & have turned down many “opportunities” ....

At present, it’s school sports & limited travel baseball, with only coaches I trust not to overwork him or screw him up.

Aside: The Dirt Devils are, at it’s core, the Clinton Dixie Youth all-stars team from the 8-12 years, with a few friends added from close towns. The Clinton DYB won state in 2013 (coach’s pitch), 2015, & 2017- coming in 3rd, 3rd, & 2nd in the DYB world series, the last 2 losing to the same Alabama team in close games both times.

As a lead off hitter speed was a very close friend of mine. Let’s just say I could steal bases like Willie Mays Hayes.
