either way melting metal is cool shit, unfortunately a lot of variables surround the process and the only real way to know how good it is, is having it tested. aesthetics isn't an acceptable inspection method as i've seen my pretty welds break.

You can stack dimes with a mig welder that doesnt involve 400 tack welds. When I weld real thick stuff I like to weld pretty hot, and carry a pretty wide bead at about a half inch across or more. Using a large cursive e pattern yields a dime like effect. Literally did this yesterday, should've grabbed pics.

This not so great pic of my rear bumper will have to do. That was .035 wire run at 24 volts, right on the verge of a spray arc. 0525181056.jpg

Here’s my “whip it” which is the technique I use most

Move to NH. Work some OT now and then. It's not so bad. I came from pipe welding nat gas plants + steam in the field, so it took some time getting used to. But it's good work. We have about a 20 year backlog of work.

You should rename it the "17 tack salute" method since you clearly tack'd it 17 times in that pic.

if you cant wrap 180* around .080 1-3/4" down hill with dimes like this, you're not a true welder

I have such a hard time with those 180 degree welds. Because of the movement and angle change throws me off and freaks me out.

yeah, imagine welding this up, all the welds you see from this point had to be 180* wrapped & uniform (lets say one side had a large cope gap, i had to make the small cope gap side match so it'd get a bigger weld than necessary
