Components using factory head unit?

I would like to keep my factory head unit but add a component system as I don't really have room for a sub (07 reg cab). I know i'll need an external amp to power them but any ideas on using a signal processor? Will I even need one. I've always heard it's heard to get as much bass out of aftermarket component systems as you had with the factory.

 

I'm interested in this as well. I just want to add new speakers, and a sub but keep the stock headunit.

 

I've done it before in a ford without any processors but the sound wasn't shaped quite like I wanted it. I'm sure you'd want to steer clear of the passive processors and go for an active (powered) one right?

 

Yeah, i would say that a powered one is a must. I'm going to go down to an audio store today and talk to them.

 

Thanks. So i will need an amp for the subwoofer, but will i need one to power my new speakers? I would assume that the factory stereo puts out very little amperage.

 

Yeah i was just thinking of that... with the sound processors being 120+ it would seem to better to just go with a new headunit. Thanks for the help.

 

That's another good point, i forgot about thieves. I guess im going to go to an audio store and see how much they want to rip me off. I'm going to do the install myself though, and i think i'll do some dampening too.

 

Im putting my audio together right now. im using a pac 4ch loc which is powered and gives a clearer signal out. Now i know its still not an audio processor but im also trying not to get overly complicated since its more than enough for my daily driving. I also dont want to attract thieves as they usually break your window, and destroy your interior.

 

Well i was about to go to the audio store and then my mom and dad were like wait you should open your presents first, lol. They ended up getting me a 250w amp and a JL 12" sub and box along with a line out converter. The install was fairly easy, i just tapped into the rear speaker wires. Only problem is now my ears hurt...
