Any issues fitting 285s? I currently have 265/70/17 but want to go bigger.

lift doesn't matter. It's about the width. You'll probably need to do the cab mount chop, pinch weld hammer, and trim the inner fender plastic. With a 4 cyl I wonder if power will be an issue.

Power and driveablility will have a noticeable loss. You will have to clearance for the tire just the same as you would with any other model. Lots of information available on tire fitment.

Truck will be a dog with bigger tires. If not regearing, id stick with a 265/70/17 or a 265/75/16

Probably still gonna need to some cutting, though experiences vary.

I don't have a 4 cylinder, but I have a lifted V6 with 285s and I do not rub; I did not have to cut or make any modifications to the frame or wheel well. The smallest lift you can probably manage to fit a 285 without rubbing is a 3" but I could be wrong. Since you have a 2", that is cutting it close to the wire.

Personally, I don't feel like it's sluggish even with a lift and heavy tires. It must be people's perspectives. That's coming from someone who used to drive an old Civic that was extremely slow to accelerate. Even with my setup, it's still faster than any car I've owned and driven. These people must be used to driving Tundras or F-150s.

Power and mpg loss is a given with bigger tires and a lift, but it isn't so noticeable to where I regret anything. My stock tacoma averaged 21-22 mpgs but with the new setup, I average 17-18 mpgs. That's still better mileage than a Tundra.

I would take everyone else's opinion with a grain of salt.

Many variables come into play with 285s, wheel weight, tire weight, load rating, etc.

Lift is a generic term which needs more information in this case. This guy has what looks to be a spindle lift, which will increase tire clearance on 2wd vehicles by moving the hub downwards in relation to the control arms. This means the wheel will not travel as high into the wheel well.

This is not the same as a suspension lift. If you have a 4wd vehicle spindles are not an option. Rubbing can also be subjective based on the usage of a vehicle. Someone who actually wheels their truck and gets in situations that create lots of articulation and need to turn the wheels when the suspension is compressed will rub harder and more frequently and need clearance done to their cab mount and wheel well.

For the OP, without any lift, or even with your typical 2" suspension lift, you will need to clearance for a 285 width 33" tire. From a fellow SR 4 banger owner on 33s, it will effect the driveablility of your 4 banger.

If it was a manual, I would say go for it.

I ran 295/70/17s with my 2.7L 5spd for 1k miles before regearing to 4.88s. It was absolutely dreadful. Truck got 13-14mpg and it wouldnt even touch 5th gear. Would barely hold 4th on the hwy. if i did it again, id regear first and then get bigger tires. The truck really struggled on stock 4.10s. I think the 3rd gens 4cyls have 4.30s though? And a little more hp, so you may be alright

The auto trans 4 bangers have a 4.30 ring and pinion. The manual trans have a 3.909 ring and pinion.

33's without a regear is brutal. I regeared to 4.88 a few days after I went to 33's

285 65 18 on 2.5 inches of lift. I have a -24 offset. I did rub at full turn in reverse with cab trimming but only in reverse. Went ahead and got a cab mount chop and cranked coils to 2.75 and now I have clearance for days! I would say it can be done with the right offset and wheel and tire combo with probably 3 inch lift with minor trimming!
