I've had my 2008 Tacoma about ten days now and I'm noticing a problem with my throttle. My Tacoma is the V6 with the 6 speed stick. When I let up on the gas the engine doesn't slow down, it will stay at about 1400 rpm until I come close to a stop and then it will fall to 800 rpm. When driving in traffic it becomes a pain because you have to keep using the brake and putting the clutch in or you'll hit the care in front of you. There seems to be no engine braking to the truck. Today I took the truck to 30 mph and let up on the gas and it held that speed for a complete block. This can't be right, it's potentially dangerous. Is this a common problem?

part of the drive by wire setup. its normal from the things your describing. once your start modding your truck, if you decide to do such, things like an intake, or headers, will help with engine braking.

the rpms are made to hang so that the engine burns off any extra fuel that may be left on accel, and to "ease" the change in gears.

Thats how mine works also,if im going to be slowing down I just usually kick her out of gear coast out and use the brakes 100% of the time, unless I'm up in the hills or over 55mph

The I-4 engine-brakes fairly well...I hardly use my brakes. But it does tend to roll under power until I depress the clutch when coming to a stop. Besides the drive-by-wire, it probably has to do with the gearing too. These trucks have great low-end torque so it naturally prevents the engine from stalling even at low RPM. Try this sometime by getting the truck rolling from a stop without using the gas.

try downshifting gears...because its fly-by wire throttle control matched with the ECU...like mentioned above its burning the excess fuel off...

what I do is when coming to a stop I rev the motor and down shift that way the gearing matches the RPMs and I slow down a lot quicker without having to use the brake as much...its not hard been doing it all my years from driving my trucks and street bikes. its a racing thing...lol

^^ i drive the same way, downshifting to another gear as my speed comes down to a stop. brakes last a lot longer this way also.

Fuck the brakes, there easy to change.I hate changing clutches.Plus unless your hauling a load or need braking assist your just adding heat and stress to the engine IMHO.

the gears are what slows you down not the engine...yes its called engine braking but who's to say that using the gears to slow your vehicle down instead of the brakes causes more heat and stress on the engine when compared to easy/hard acceleration from a dead stop?

yes we are entitled to our own opinions but if you have some sort of video to show the temps in the engine increase cause of engine braking and show me a wear and tear pictures from using your gears to slow down instead of brakes then I'll say you are correct...but until then its just personal preference and personal opinion nothing more and nothing less...
