What are you doing for a kayak rack?

Just became a proud owner of a 2019 TRD-Off Road AC. Looking for a solution that will allow me to haul my kayaks using a bed rack so I have full access to the bed. I would also like to TC that can remain installed as well.

I'm looking a few options. One that stands out is the Undercover Ridgelander. I like the modularity of it, as I would eventually like to venture into overlanding. I've also seen many people on the site using some pretty neat systems with Diamondback, but not many that utilize them for kayak transportation.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

We haven't tried two boats yet, but I believe with the tonneau rails off, we can squeeze two in with a bit of protection between the boats.

Right I'd love something like that but would also work with my TC. It appears that I could have this solution with Diamondback but I'm not sure about shelling out $1500 plus for it.

 

I like the DiamondBack cover as well. Originally I was thinking mine in the bed and the wife's on top of the DiamondBack. I'm not sure that would give her boat enough support though with the short bed. I'm now thinking of putting her's on a roof rack. I can use the tonneau to climb up and position her boat on the roof. That way no having to hoist a boat 5 feet in the air.

 

i just switched over to a RetraxPRO XR tonneau with a Yakima Overhaul HD bed rack. it's one of only a few tonneau + bed rack combos that still allows you full operation of the tonneau.

 

I think that'd be possible for shorter trips. With all the anchor points on the DB cover, should be able to strap it down pretty tight.

 

do you have photo's to share? i am hoping to get the same setup as well when it gets back in stock! do you have the side bars also?

 

I have a Thule Xsporter. I’m not using any cradles, just the load stops.

 

Factory rack has done well enough. Not very solid but seems sturdy enough for road use. Probably wouldn’t use it on a bouncy off camber dirt road.

12.5 ft kayaks. Cheap off Amazon. It’s three pieces I can take apart and store in the truck in less then minute. Rated for a few hundred lbs.

 

I use the very solid, high quality "t-Bone."

 

This works well for me and is a lot cheaper. As inexpensive as it is, I can't find anything to complain about. It works great and is very solid.

If you want to keep the bed free and keep the TC, than your best bet is probably a roof rack.

Get a quality one with a higher load rating than the factory for hauling 2 kayaks.

Or just get a trailer. I converted a small boat trailer and can easily haul 4 kayaks. Cheaper than a Prinsu rack too.

Otherwise if you really want a bed rack. I am pretty sure KB Voodoo has options for you. I would get a cab height rack so your kayaks clear the cab rather than butt up against the glass of the rear window.

 

i'm currently only using the rack to haul paddle boards, so no need for the side bars. that's a 14' board for reference.

 

Got the Malone Versarail rack with Malone Seawings. This is temporary until I can afford Prinsu but it’s solid. Taking it on a 3 and a half hour road trip next weekend!

Not a TC, and not a kayak, but this works well, too. I'll have to add some longer cross bars to carry two canoes at once.
