I still dont think playing him while injured was the best call. Especially since they were scratching a healthy player so they could have 7 D. Not that it would have mattered all that much. Let's Go Blues

 

To be honest I think pav means more to the team than almost anyone.

Ya. I heard Jumbo interview on way to work this morning and it sounds like somehow he will be back. They def should find a way to make it work w/ Pavs too though.

 

Guys are getting paid. It's funny how around here people are saying Pens need to unload Kessel's sub-7Mil contract. Why? PPG guy and our best PP producer. When Hayes is getting 7mil and Skinner getting over 9mil, I'll take a 31 year old Kessel for a couple more years at 6.5mil or whatever it ends up being.

On the flip side, hearing Marner wants max deal. 3 guys at 11Mil or more? Are they going to be able to do it? What's the word around your city?

 

Well I don’t live in Toronto so I don’t know the buzz to be honest. I mean the media keeps talking about how Marner is a home town kid and should be treated special but, at some point, Marner needs to realize Matthews is a better overall player and he doesn’t deserve Matthews level money. If Mariner wants max he’s going to have to walk. That’s pretty much a given. If he’s that coo coo then I would hope he’ll simply sign an offer sheet from some nutty GM and Toronto could turn four first round picks into a reliable D core.

 

On that note @AJH387 I guarantee that one of the big CBA negotiations is ELCs and arbitration. The GMs will want full arbitration after the ELC is completed for sure now. Ever since the cOilers gave away the farm to their kids before they had done anything the expectation from young superstars is that they get max deals right after their ELCs and that makes zero sense for a sustainable cap model.

I hate to say it but maybe the NHL needs to do what other leagues have and open up 2-3 spots for players that are cap exempt or have a reduced impact, to allow some market economics for the benefit of the players at the top end while preserving the cap.

 

Ya that all makes sense. This morning, they were also saying that due to the players not wanting to pay as much into the escrow, that the cap is expected to slow up as far as where the ceiling rises. So that is another thing that GMs are having to keep in mind for the next season or 2 (whenever the CBA renegotiates).

 

GMs are their own worst enemies. They can be aware of the cap crunch but I doubt it'll slow down spending at all. Watch, there will be another 20% rollback on salaries in this CBA that the GMs will blame the players for lol.
