I put a tint meter on my windows today that’s used for NYS inspections. The factory rear window tint is exactly 30%, and the front windows are 75% even though they appear mostly clear.

I thought this would be useful information to anyone looking to tint their windows and match the factory tint, but I’m also more confused on what to use to match the factory rear windows. If the front windows are only allowing 75% light transmission, does that mean I need to use 45% tint to achieve a total of 30% light transmission?

From what I understand, the rear windows are not tinted, they are painted glass. Won't block UVA and UVB rays. But I could be wrong.

The factory windows are imbedded or painted or some such other process, which lends them to reading higher on a tint meter than they actually look. My tint guy told me a 25% on the front would match the rear windows and he was right. There’s a bit of a shade difference looking from inside out but looking at the truck from the outside it matches perfectly.

im guessing some of this is specific to the state you buy the truck in.

My fronts had zero tint from the factory and my tint guy matched the rears with 35%.

If I remember correctly, factory is not tint but imbedded dye of some sort, and offers no UV protection. Better off tinting all windows at least a little for the UV and heat protection alone. I went pretty dark but I’ve heard that others still notice the temp difference with less tint too.

Everyone I asked (including the tint guys) said it was about 30%. Slap some 15% all around and folks can't watch your booger picking.

Are you sure it has zero tint on the front? In NY you can’t even pass inspection with tinted front windows and although my front windows look perfectly clear, they measure 75 on a meter. I thought mine were clear but measured anyways and was surprised by the 75 I read on the meter.

NYS has exemptions for factory tint. The "green" tint is actually sufficient to limit about 30% of incoming light transmission. The tint meter I've used for enforcement usually pegs it around 72%.

Lol, that's probably the hardest thing for me to write. I can't in good conscience issue someone else a ticket for something I have on my own personal vehicle lmao. Now tinted windshields...that's a horse of a different color lmfao.

Haha tinted windshields are just begging for a ticket! I’ve ridden in vehicles with tinted windshields and I don’t like them....especially at night

That a no-can-do. I love tinted windows. I went 20% all the way around on my TL which was a little hard to see. 30-35 ain’t too bad though.

I read the same. The glass is “smoked”. So it’s more for privacy. The fronts have a light tint applied

The fronts have a tint laminate already applied (or at least mine do). So you would have to have that removed before applying a tint correctly. So you could do 30% up front, if your local laws allow that dark. However, the “smoked” rears have hue that might be difficult to match with
