Yeah this is what I'm dealing with right now I had to take the Fan off after dropping the fan guard and now I'm in there trying to grip the edge and work it off

This thing is so hard to get off it feels reverse threaded I can barely get any purchase with the vice grips and not be in the way of the ratchet head

Victory. That was just as much of a rusted pain in the ass as everything else on the Tacoma. Look at all that free space

Isn’t it great when things actually work out!!! Such a great feeling fixing this before dropping a s*** load of $ and/or time into it.

This thread just saved me a bunch of money, thanks OP.
4cyl, so loosening the fan shroud and removing the fan blades gave me just enough room to get at it.

What if while observing this the pulley spins and the clutch engages and spins then cuts off?

Then likely the clutch is good, and the system is being shut off via a safety mechanism, like low or high pressure.

    This^
When it shuts off, does it restart a few seconds later? Then shut off again? If so, likely low on freon.

No once it cuts off it stays off .. in my quest to check if it was low on Freon I hooked up a quick charge gauge and when it is on it’s a little high but still green when it kicks off the pressure is high on low pressure side in the red . Don’t know if this helps but I’m pretty sure it’s not low .

Think the only other possibility is the ac amplifier maybe .. if anyone has any other ideas I’d love to hear . Now how do I get the amplifier out ?

That's normal, it's probably not low. When it kicks out, do you have to turn off the AC to get it to restart, and/or does the AC light blink? AC amplifier is behind the glove box, I think. @Jimmyh can put up a diagram. I kinda doubt it's the amplifier.
Best thing now is to hook up a gauge manifold and post the numbers, low and high, when it quits. Again, does the AC light start blinking?

Ya that’s what I’ve been trying to troubleshoot was the blinking ac light . When I turn the ac on it comes on for just a couple seconds then cuts off and starts flashing . I replaced the relay and watched the clutch engage and the compressor spin. The clutch appears ok there’s no black leaking like others have had , it looks good (not sayin it is but appears to be and appears to work by engaging ). Not sure where else to look other than the compressor pickup sensor. If it’s that then I’d prob be better off just ordering a new compressor I would think .

This would be my guess now. IF the compressor is turning as fast as it should. Sensor is a lot cheaper than a compressor.
Blinking light means compressor rpm is not matching engine rpm. Or, the sensor is shot.

If it is that sensor it appears I need to order it with a compressor as I don’t think I can order it by itself and I still have to take the compressor out and have it expelled and refilled I believe if I read it correctly .

There is only one bolt holding the sensor in place. You should be able to get it from the bottom without removing the compressor.

See the second document above shows how to test the sensor magnetic pickup.

The part number for the Sensor only is: Part Number: 8834604010

    https://parts.westcoasttoyotalb.com...--COMPRESSOR-PICK-UP/63188737/8834604010.html $92.00

    https://parts.olathetoyota.com/oem-parts/toyota-sensor-compressor-p-8834604010 $97.00

    https://toyotaparts.mcgeorgetoyota.com/oem-parts/toyota-sensor-compressor-p-8834604010 $86.00

They are a bit pricey however, about 100 bucks. I would remove the one in the truck and test it above in the pdf first before spending 100 dollars.

Great thanks , I’ll give that one a shot and see if that is the culprit.

Did any of you guys have PAG oil around the shims/splines on the compressor/clutch?

I would think if it's for sure PAG oil the you might need a new compressor, unless you want to try to reseal it.
