I don't think the the bull bar is what kept the airbags from going off.

There is not some kind of trigger in or around the bumper. The airbag system has sensors (located in different places in different vehicles - sometimes in the steering column or on the firewall) that measure the force of deceleration of the vehicle. The sensors are accelerometers that measure the amount of force over time (think milliseconds) to determine whether an airbag deployment is merited. Time is a factor, because a characteristic of a crash bad enough to require an airbag is that there is a lot deceleration in a very brief period of time. If you put a strap on the frame at the back of the truck, and yanked it backwards from a standstill forcefully enough, and suddenly enough, it would set the airbags off. (That would have to be one heck of a strap...)

The bull bar MAY have been a factor in that it could have provided a little more metal to absorb energy, so your truck did not slow down quickly or strongly enough so that the sensor activated the airbags. But a really big pillow would have done the same thing.

So, why were you in the left lane with a bike passing you on the right is what I want to know?

maybr this is somewhat of an older post, but i recently put a third bolt on my smittybilt bull bar so that it somewhat prevents my bull bar from driving into my front bumper, but i used really small bolts so the should sheer with a sharp impact. my question is, was your frame bent at all. or the bolts that the bull bar mount attaches to?

The bull bar was bent even farther where the 90* bends are and the mounts were also bent. The bumper brackets where they attach were also bent but i think that would have happened anyway
